Ashley Jinxed The Sheriff

Ashley visited his grandpa's gravestone in their old house on the top of the village mountain. It was his usual routine every Wednesday evening to go to the top of the village mountain from where he would be able to see the whole community and rest his head. 

On this particular Wednesday, while he was on the mountain, the rain came down heavily and there was no place where he could hide his head except the large Dongoyaro tree that is next to the grave of his grandpa. So, he ran to stay there while the rain fell. 

As the raindrops increased, a flash of lightning zoomed across the sky. Stones like sand fell from the sky and Ashley's heart began to beat fast. Something still made him remain calm. As he took a step to go left, turning to face his grandpa's grave, a golden ring was just there, on top of the gravestone. On the gravestone, the inscription:

Matthias Bakers 1890- 1980

He returned home after the rain, walking down the slippery mountain with a lot of caution. 

That day marked the beginning of something strange in Ashley's life. 

First, he began to have some strange dreams. In one of the dreams, an old man appeared to him telling him that he has been endowed with the gift to order and stop any evil occurrence. 

Ashley took it with levity and continued with his daily life. 

Whereas, Jonas, a criminal who was jailed for peddling cracks and other substances that are termed contrabands, had served his term in jail and was to be released but the authorities requested that he be conscripted into the police force. 

After his training at the police college, Jonas started as a police agent. He already knew the nooks and crannies where peddlers and gamblers hideouts. So, he ransacked the hideouts and brought many criminals to justice.

In a short while, Jonas has led the police team to comb the town. But he was victimising most of the criminals for his gains. 

At one point, he joined one cult group to overhaul the rival cult group and he was handsomely paid. 

This had continued for several years until Jonas was transferred to the town where Ashley was plying his trade.

The crime rate here is not as much as in other places where he had worked before. Jonas soon begins to have issues with lawful individuals who go about their daily duties. 

One hot afternoon, he led a group of police officers to the popular injunction and started collecting inducement from motorists. It was a very demeaning exercise but with the policemen, it was a usual thing for them. The level of corruption in the force is untold. 

Reports have reached the police department that Jonas had been customising law-abiding citizens and robbing them of their hard-earned substance. 

Since Jonas was seen as a fine police officer, the reports were swept under the carpet. 

One day, Ashley was in the company of his friends and they were heading to the stadium to watch the super eagles world cup qualifying match against the black stars of Ghana. 

From nowhere, Ashley halted all the boys and began to search them. It was such an humiliation. They were so embarrassed. 

Jonas took their phones, wallets and other valuables. 

When he got to the turn of Ashley and his friends. They wanted to know why the stop and search was being carried out but Jonas was not going to give them any solid evidence, he just continued with the anomaly. 

Ashley got so infuriated that he remembered that he had a gift to make order. On the top of his voice, he echoed

Freeze!!!

Jonas and his men got frozen in the air. There was commotion everywhere. 

The boys who were been searched, took their belongings and matched to the stadium, not minding whose ox was gored. 

News about this began to fly here and there. Since no one knew Ashley, they couldn't get to him. 

All effort to unfreeze Jonas and the other officers proved abortive. 

After four days, Ashley wrote an anonymous letter to the police department asking them to erect a statue to replace the corrupt officers else, they would not unfreeze.

This they did and it became a national disturbance that the force is as corrupt as those in government.
