The Calming Touch (Dr. Silva Part 4)

'You shouldn't be here, Lilly.' Dr. Silva put a hand out and I instantly jumped out of her reach. I didn't know what kind of freaky thing she was doing with her hands but there was no way I was letting her touch me.

I had been so focused on trying to make sense of what I had seen that I had failed to notice I'd followed them back to what I assumed was the other patients room.

'Alex.' The name slipped from my lips and the man jerked his head in my direction, dark hair flopping in his face as he did.

'Are you okay?'

He was already sleeping.

The second doctor in the room, the man who had come to the door quickly herded me from the small room and shut the door.

'He'll be fine.'

I could feel myself shaking. None of this made any sense. I should have run when I had the chance.

Too late now.

'Is this her?'

Dr. Silva gave me a quick glance. 'Yes. This is Miss Ainsley. Lilly, this is Doctor Burton.'

I could swear I saw a spark of interest in Dr. Burtons eye before it quickly vanished again as he looked me over. I was acutely aware in that moment of how little coverage the meager hospital gown I was in provided. It hadn't mattered when I was alone in my room but now, this was another thing altogether.

He turned to Dr. Silva and spoke with authority that brooked no room for argument. It was clear he was in charge, if not of the hospital then at least of Dr. Silva.

'Get her in some clothes and escort her to the lab in fifteen minutes.' Without another word he walked down the hallway leaving the both of us staring dumbfounded after him.

The promise of real clothes was more than enough to have me walk back to my room with the doctor. Even if I was going to run, I couldn't very well do it in a hospital gown; too conspicuous. We walked back in silence in part because I was trying to get my bearings; I had lost sense of which way I had come while following them. And partly because I was still trying to make sense of what I had seen and was too terrified to ask about it.

It wasn't until I exited the bathroom fully dressed in a simple T-shirt and sweat pants five minutes later that I finally found my voice again.

'What did you do to that man? Alex, I mean.'

'I helped him.' She said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world which only increased my annoyance.

'How? All you did was touch him. How did you-' I stopped. I couldn't say anymore. What if I was crazy?

Dr. Silva sighed and opened the door, motioning for me to step out ahead of her.

'It's a gift. Dr. Burton calls it The calming touch.'

I thought back to the day I had woken up. I had been asking her questions and she had been giving me vague answers. I had gotten tired and gone to sleep...

'You used it on me. The first day I woke up, didn't you?' My voice rang out in the elevator just as the doors closed.

I bit my tongue while I waited for her to answer. Finally she nodded just as the doors opened again.

'You needed to rest.'

I swallowed my anger and took care to check out my surroundings. I knew we were on the fourth floor from the button I had seen her press. Not many doors up here. They had windows though. Not that it did me much good, at least I knew it was day time though. The clock on the wall said ten thirty.

She led me down the hall, stopping about halfway down, then turning to face me again.

I wasn't sure of exactly what to expect but I figured people bustling around in lab coats with blood samples or hovering over microscopes or something wasn't too far from the norm. What was actually in the room, made me forget all about my anger at Dr. Silva.

A gift of calming down abused for the own benefit. No need to answer ever. It would make me angry. Let's look for a way out of there.
