A New Beginning

She sat in the corner of the small café where blessedly, no one had seemed to notice her. She was still nursing the coffee she had ordered an hour ago. She wasn't in any rush. Besides, she had nowhere to be anymore.

She took a small sip of her drink and scowled as the cold bitter liquid hit her tongue. She forced herself to drink it anyway and mindlessly browsed the internet on her phone. The sound of the chair across from her being moved brought her back to reality though she paid little attention until she noticed the person was not taking the chair to another table.

She looked up and placed her phone on the table but said nothing. The look on her face said it all really. This person was not someone she wanted to see or talk to and she did her best to convey that with her expression. Either the woman was particularly bad at reading social queues, or she simply didn't care. Likely it was the latter.

'Got some nerve being in here, especially now, haven't you Maggie?'

She spit her name like a curse word but Maggie pretended not to notice just how much anger was being directed at her. Ally had never really liked her much and things weren't likely to improve now.

The lack of response didn't deter Ally, much to Maggies' dismay and she swiftly continued.

'Do you even know what today is or are you really that heartless?' She demanded angrily.

Maggie flinched. Of course she knew what today was, or rather what it would have been. The date was circled on the calendar with a big 3 proudly displayed in the box.

'Of course I remember.'

Ally scoffed and leaned forward.

'So this is your idea of a joke then, is it? Coming here of all places where the two of you met, where you had your first date. You just had to come here on your anniversary.'

Maggie shook her head but didn't get the chance to speak since Ally kept right on going oblivious to the few people in the café staring at them intently.

'He doesn't come here anymore so if you were hoping to rub it in his face-'

Maggie cut her off swiftly surprised by how much anger was in her own voice.

'Don't. I came here because I like it here. It has nothing to do with him. We met here because I've loved this place for years, even before I met him.'

Maggie could see why she might think that though. Truthfully it had been a major lapse in judgement to come here today and she was very much wishing she hadn't now.

'Love. So you're actually capable of that, are you? But only for places I suppose and not people. Or not my brother anyway. Sitting here, drinking coffee like you don't have a care in the world while he suffers.'

'You have no idea what happened.'

Maggie was a bit surprised that she didn't much care about the few people around them anymore. She almost felt like she needed to do this. Like maybe this was the reason for her coming here today, so she could move on.

'You broke his heart.' Ally told her raising her voice.

Maggie shook her head again and looked solemnly at the blonde.

'No. I didn't. It was never mine to break.' Maggie knew as she said the words that they were completely true and a little part of her broke. She had known it already but somehow, saying it aloud made it real. Even more real than the breakup.

'Whatever you did to him, it destroyed him.'

Maggie stood up and looked her right in the eyes. She couldn't be mad at her. Ally didn't know everything. She only knew the pieces she saw and whatever her brother chose to tell her which knowing Sam, wasn't much.

Now that she thought about it, her and Ally had something in common. Sam didn't tell either of them very much.

'All I did was walk away from a man who wouldn't let me in.'
