The day has come! The postponed edition of the European Football Championship starts today! The new format has 24 qualified countries, 6 groups with matches played in 11 countries: Azerbaijan, Denmark, England, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Romania, Russia, Scotland and Spain.
Portugal won the previous edition, after winning against France at Saint Denis. Germany and Spain are the most successful teams, with 3 European trophies, followed by France with two wins. The Soviet Union, Italy, Czech Republic, Portugal, Netherlands, Denmark and Greece won the European tournament once.
All the roads lead to Roma, as the 16th edition of the Euros will start with Italy v Turkey, kicking of at 8 PM UTC!
Italy, Turkey, Switzerland and Wales are part of Group A and their matches will be played in Roma and Baku.
Denmark, Russia, Finland and Belgium are part of group B and their matches will be played in Saint Petersburg and Copenhagen
Netherland, Ukraine, Austria and North Macedonia are part of group C and their matches will be played in Amsterdam and Bucharest. Unfortunately Romania didn't qualified for the final stages and missed the chance to play at home.
England, Scotland, Croatia and the Czech Republic are part of group D and their matches will be played in London and Glasgow.
Spain, Sweden, Slovakia and Poland are part of group E and their matches will be played in Seville and Saint Petersburg.
Germany, Portugal, France and Hungary are part of group F and their matches will be played in Munich and Budapest.
I have a favorite trio to lift the trophy, chosen based on various reasons that I will expand into the next article. I am sure that Belgium, Spain or Germany will be on the pitch at Wembley, and will win the EURO 2020!
Italy against Turkey will be the opening match of the tournament and Italy will always be one of the favorites. The Italian squad lacks a clear superstar but I can forecast that Ciro Immobile or Lorenzo Insigne will score some goals. Turkey will step up to the expectations and the main man to shine will be Hakan Calhanoglu, a player who knows really well the Italian football.
The logical outcome of the game will be a short win for Italy, maybe a well defended 1-0 in the Italian style.
