The start determines the end. If I wake up, I dress my bed immediately, and not because of whatever my Mom said, but because I'd love to come back to crash on a tidy bed. I'm this 'big planner' kind of personality, so my entire week is mapped out by the previous Saturday. But schedules and plans were something I had to learn, I'm basically this guy that loves spontaneity and 'going with the flow', so even if things happen to go beyond my control, I'm totally on top of things.(Commands 1 and 2)
This rule applies not only to doctors, but to all living things: You have to force situations around you to bend to your will or you let Fate decide what happens. And trust me, Fate does not always have your best interests at heart. So yes, I said it, I don't believe in " That was my fate", but "That was what I did to myself".
Discipline and Commitment (Command 7)
I would rather spend some days in bed, but this career choice was my own doing. I have to commit to success, because no on likes the bitter taste of failure. So yes, I'd put in those extra hours at night and still wake up early to attend all those lectures because this is what I've signed up for.
Despite maintaining focus on my career, I don't lose focus on my other talents. (Command 4)
The fact is that a career is just that... a career.
What I'm going to be in life isn't limited to the operating room. I love writing and fine arts, and I'm not just going to let all that go to waste. That's why I always love to find new skill and develop existent ones. Life is too short to overlook undiscovered talents because you were putting all your eggs in one basket. You'll just be cooking up trouble for yourself.
I spice my day with creativity (Command 5)
Can I find a good mnemonic to remember what I was taught in class? From myself or from books?
EXAMPLE: Slap the Lawyer, Save the Patient - used to remember branches of the Axillary Artery - Sup. Thoracic, Thoracodorsal, Lateral Thoracic, Subscapular, Ant. Circumflex. Humeral, Post. Circumflex Humeral.
Sorry to bore you ;).
Lectures don't always have to be as stiff and 'plain vanilla' as our professors try to make them. Whenever I spice things up with a little creativity, it makes the learning process less robot and more human.
Be real (Command 10)
I'm not overly optimistic or pessimistic. I tell myself the cold hard truth.
I've done well today. I covered what I pledged to. Good Job.
I didn't come up to par. I was too distracted today. I can do better.
Don't harm your self-esteem by being too critical about your efforts, you're only human. Don't overlook your shortcomings - face them and pledge to do better next time.
I can't perceive such (CPS) a practice as being conceited or self-critical.
If you don't keep yourself in check, Life will checkmate you.
Find Inner Peace (Command 21)
It has been a stressful day, and you can permit yourself some hours of relaxation. It isn't easy to be you, so you can take the day off sometimes.
Relax.
Plan a vacation.
Take a walk.
Visit friends.
Watch a movie.
Take care of your pets.
Watch some Stand-Up comedy and enjoy laughing out loud.
Where I come from, there's a funny saying in 'Broken' or 'Pidgin' English:
"Try enjoy small, problems no dey finish" which translates to: Once in a while, give yourself a break, because life's problems do not take a holiday.
And they said School and the 'Real World' are two different playing fields, right? HOGWASH!
