8. Prasat Preah Viher
The temples of Angkor Wat can gain all the glory, but Prasat Preah Viher will win the prize for the most dramatic place. Located on top of the Dangrek Mountains, on a slope with stunning views of the Cambodian floodplains, Prasat Preah Vihear is a monumental temple complex with intricately carved pavilions connected by long grooves, originally built in honor of the god Shiva.
The temple is close to the border with Thailand and has historically been a dispute between the two nations, both of which claim it is their own. In 2013, the International Court of Justice ruled in favor of Cambodia, which exacerbated border disputes between 2008 and 2011.
Tensions have eased over the past few years, with UNESCO World Heritage now able to regain its legitimate role on the tourist trail. The journey is from Sra Em, although most visitors come for a day trip from Siem Reap (200 kilometers to the south).
9. Battambang
The rural rice fields and tiny villages surrounding the northwestern city of Battambang contain some of Cambodia’s quietest rural landscapes, and the area is also home to historical treasures. All this has made the city a popular destination for travelers.
For fans of history, the temples of Phnom Sampo, Phnom Banana, and Wat Ek Phnom are within a day's distance, while the famous Bamboo is a single-track railway where "wagons" made of wooden and bamboo platforms travel between the east bank of Battambang and a tiny village. O-Srav is one of the most popular events for visitors.
Battambang itself is a rather sleepy city compared to the hustle and bustle of the capital, whose central area is filled with colonial buildings. For those who think that the bustle of Phnom Penh is too loud, Battambang is a very accessible city that can be used as a base.
10. Phnom Penh
The capital of Cambodia is the frantic heartbeat of the nation; the city of chaotic streets is teeming with motorcycles and car beeps that may startle at first glance. Abandoned during the Khmer Rouge frenzy and left to wither and decline, Phnom Penh returned, becoming one of the most dynamic cities in Southeast Asia.
For visitors, this is the most liked destination in Cambodia, where restaurants and cafes have no equal in the rest of the country. There are also important historical sites that help unravel both the modern and ancient history of Cambodia.
The National Museum is home to Khmer sculpture, which traces the history of the nation from the pre-Angora era to the phenomenal majesty of the gods-kings of Angkor. The Royal Palace provides fine examples of traditional art, while the Tuol Slang Museum and the Choeung Ek assassination fields speak of the horror and cruelty experienced by the people of this country under Khmer Rouge rule.
Of all the islands, Koh Rong Samloem is one of the most beautiful, with a long sandy bay of Saracen, home to a dozen resort beach huts that offer a friendly break from the world. Here everything is actually connected with a hammock, but for more active many underwater activities are offered.
