The Ottomans considered the sword to be a symbol of justice and equality. The first sermon was delivered by Sultan Muhammad Al Fatih.
After the fall of the Ottoman Caliphate, a Khatib delivered a sermon with a sword in his hand for the first time today, also in Aya Sophia.
The name of this sword is Sword of Islam. It is said that Shaykh Adeb Ali handed over the sword to the first Ottoman Sultan Uthman during his inauguration.
On it is inscribed the first verse of Surah Fatah: Surely I have given you a clear victory.
The sermon in the hand of the sword symbolizes justice to Aya Sophia.
One picture shows a bird's eye view of the whole of Istanbul filled with people coming to pray at the Jumu'ah Jamaat, while Istanbul is one of the most westernized cities in Turkey. Hundreds of thousands of people rushed to Aya Sophia in joy at the return of prayers and call to prayer.
