Contraception also known as birth control is a preventive method to avoid unwanted pregnancy.
🍀Aim of contraception :
🔹The main aim of contraception is family planning to control population growth.
🔹Certain contraceptive measures are important to prevent STD like AIDS.
🔹Recommended to control the stress of pregnancy, labour and lactation in women suffering from heart disease.
🍀Methods of contraception :
There are two type of method;
Temporary & Permanent.
💠Temporary :(For short time duration)
🔻Male:
🔸Condom
Widely used method.
It prevents deposition of semen into the vagina.
🍁Advantage :Easily available, cheap & safe.
Can prevent STD.
🔸Withdrawal method or natural method.
💠Female :
🔸 OCP- Oral contraceptive pill...widely used method for women.
There are various types of OCP such as-
▪Combine pill or classical pill
▪Sequential pill
▪Progesterone only pill (POP)
▪post coital pill / emergency pill
🍀Mode of action of OCP:
▪Estrogen & progesterone inhibit the pituitary secretion of gonadotrophin that is necessary for ovulation. Thus prevent ovulation.
▪Progesterone render the cervical mucous thick & scanty,there by prevent sperm penetration.
▪Progesterone also inhibits the tubal mobility & delay the transport of sperm & ovum to the uterine cavity.
🔸IUD(Intrauterine device) ---is a T shaped plastic device inserted into the uterus ;;Lippes loop,Copper T.
🔸Diaphragm /Cervical cap
Covers the cervix & prevent entry of sperm into uterus.
🔸Spermicidal jelly, cream.
🔸Safe period /Calender method:
It is the period when conception doesn’t occur by inter course.It is a effective & awesome method for contraception as it doesn’t have any side effect.
🍁Duration:From 5th day of menstrual cycle up to 9th day
& from 19th day up to 28th day.
In a women having regular menstrual cycle, ovulation occurs on 14th day of the cycle. After ovulation ovum remains viable for 2 -3 days.
Similarly after ejaculation sperm remain alive for 1-2 days.
💠Permanent method:
🍀Male:Vasectomy (Surgical procedure for male sterilization where the male vasa deferentia is cut & tied so as to prevent sperm from entering into the urethra & there by prevent fertilization.
🍀Female:Tubectomy(Tubal ligation for women is a surgical procedure where fallopian tubes are removed for preventing sperm from entering thus to prevent fertilization.
