Have you ever thought about taking honey along with taking medicine? Or drink honey after taking medicine, is it okay or not?

Drinking something sweet after taking medicine is sometimes necessary. It prevents nausea from the bitter taste of taking pills or powders. Usually many people will eat a small spoonful of sugar to get rid of the bitter taste of the medicine. Then, how about drinking honey? Are there any effects or benefits that are felt by drinking honey after taking the drug?

Honey is a natural liquid produced by stinging animals, namely bees. Drinking honey is believed to bring many benefits. Honey contains a lot of nutrients that are beneficial for health of the body. Beneficial substances in honey are:

Carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are the main content of honey. About 82% carbohydrate content in honey.

Proteins and amino acids

Honey contains a number of enzymes and 18 types of free amino acids, most of which are in the form of proline.

Vitamins, minerals and antioxidants

Honey contains a number of B vitamins, namely riboflavin, niacin, folic acid, pantothenic acid, and vitamin B6, as well as vitamin C. It also contains minerals, such as calcium, iron, zinc, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, selenium, chromium, and manganese. Antioxidants in honey are found in the form of flavonoids, ascorbic acid, catalase, and selenium. Honey also contains organic acids and aromatic acids.

Actually it's okay to drink honey after taking pills or drugs, as long as honey is pure without any additives and chemicals. But, you should give a break between taking medicine and honey for about 30 minutes. This is done to avoid drug complications with natural herbal ingredients that can increase risk of disease.

Honey can actually increase risk of bleeding when combined with certain thyroid medications and supplements. Several cases reported that occurrence of bleeding due to content of honey can interfere with the body's system in producing herbal medicinal ingredients that damage function of liver enzymes.

Drinking honey can increase risk of bleeding when taken at the same time as medications that increase risk of bleeding. Some examples of medications include aspirin, anticoagulants (blood thinning drugs), medication warfarin or heparin, anti-platelet drugs such as clopidogrel, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or naproxen.

So the conclusion is, drinking honey should not be done at same time as taking medication to prevent any adverse effects that might occur due to complications between the drug and honey. If you want to consume honey then give a pause after taking the medicine, at least 30 minutes so as not to interfere with the effects of the drug.

My advice, if you take herbal supplements such as honey and others, you should not take it with chemical drugs to prevent bad effects from occurring. Vice versa, if you are consuming chemical drugs then you should not take it together with herbal supplements. Thank you for reading this article! Hopefully useful and can add to your insight.
