Is Zoom Spying on us?

How private is Zoom, really?

For years, Zoom claimed to have end-to-end encryption for all its calls, which means that users can communicate securely with each other, and no one else -- not even Zoom -- can access the call.

It turns out this wasn't true, and yesterday the FTC reached a settlement with Zoom about its misleading language.

Even though Zoom now actually IS rolling out e2eE for its users, is it a platform we can really trust? And how do the alternatives compare?

At 6:40 you mentioned alternatives.
A good habit is to use tools which

  • are end-to-end (and everything along the way) _completely_OpenSource
  • have no (zero) options for providing any phone number
  • have no (zero) options for providing any email address
  • have no (zero) options for providing any kind of 'joining' info
    and casually mention that
"how unfortunate! (but, we told you so)":
if you accidentally delete the software
that there is no (zero) methods for reinstalling/recovering
any of your data or contacts.

The only reason to use any other product
would only be for sending sending your 'secure-line' contact details
    using a "Shamir's Secret" technique.

Formatting broke, but essentially you're saying that a good tool alternative is an open-source peer-to-peer application that everyone can use, right?

yes - that is only the first hurdle, but open_source is the most important.
(otherwise you are trusting them not to have spyware embedded in it.)

any phone/email/info options indicates:
they will have 'back doors' to get to that data.

getting implicated by association with
someone you chat with who is inside something like this:
https://memo.cash/a/5a65a57aef
could ruin your whole year... think about it! :
A drinking buddy, old girlfriend, close relative, or whoever
gets your name/phone/email/whatever
linked into their participation in some event that gets people killed
would be a mistake you can make
by thinking real p2p e2ee serverless security is paranoid.
