When we face an emergency, we mostly think of the advice that our friends or parents taught us. Some of their advice, (even though it's popular or well-known), is still dangerous. For example: putting ice on a bruise or lifting an unconscious person. So now let's tackle some of the well-known survival myths that could kill you and the survival hacks that will surely work:
1. Foreign object in the eye
If there is something in your eye like a piece of glass, don't do something on your own. Ask assistance from someone to drive you to a hospital.
But for example, the object is just an eyelash... Make sure to wash your hands before you do something in your eye. Also, locate the eyelash by looking in the mirror. Blink until you got tears in your eye. And when the eyelash is already in the corner of your eye, remove it with a wet cloth.
2. Applying ointment to a wound
The ointment has a moisture substance that could attract bacteria. So instead of putting an ointment, clean the wound with soap and water then put a dry bandage after. By doing so, the wound will heal more quickly.
3. Rubbing alcohol or vinegar to a person with a fever
Vinegar and alcohol are absorbent in the blood. So, if you rub it on a person, he could be drunk. 😅 But honestly, rubbing alcohol on a person with a fever can cause intoxication. And vinegar will cause acidity. Most especially, on the children.
So instead of doing that, drink a lot of water... Tea, and other nonalcoholic fluids. It will help the patient to cure the fever just by himself. But if it didn't recover the fever, you should see a doctor.
4. Carrying an unconscious person
Some people taught that if there's an unconscious person, lift it and sprinkle some cold water on it. That what most people do. But it's not safe.
So what do we need to do? Lift his leg and put under it a bunch of pieces of clothing. And also, don't let them stand up after they become conscious, or drink any coffee and energy drink. Why? Caffeine causes dehydration.
5. Applying butter or sour cream to burns
Some people think that this method is effective because it relieves pain. But, why does it make you feel better? It's because it's in a fridge... And when you put it in a burn, it's cold. But the dangerous part is butter and sour cream can make your skin dry that will cause the heat to soot into your skin that will cause more damage.
So what you should do with the burns? Put your hands in cold running water for 15 minutes. This will help to ease the pain.
But why do we get blisters after the burn? In our bodies, everything happens for a reason. Blisters protect the wound from infection.
6. Realign a fractured bone on your own
Are you a professional trauma surgeon? If not, never move a dislocated joint on your own. It will lead to additional injuries.
The safest way is to immobilize the injured part. And go to the hospital as soon as possible. Bandage the injury in a comfortable position. And also, remember that you need to immobilize not only the fractured part but also the 2 closest joints as well.
