Dispute happen when individuals or a group of people have different point of views that may result to a much bigger problem when not settled as early as possible. We can see it featured on a television, on social media, and in social networks—digital or printed. It is rampant all over the world, from one nation to another. A dejecting part of reality. Even our neighborhood, acquaintances, close circle of friends, and family are not excused to it.

This topic is timely most especially here in the Philippines as the National and Local Election 2022 is fast approaching. A lot of people are trying to prove their political stand. Convincing and empowering others to step up. On facebook and Twitter we can see a lot of commotions. A lot of political genius and enthusiast are coming out into the surface. People are taking sides. People fighting for the sake of politicians who doesn't even know they exist. People raining on somebody else's parade, ruining other's credibility, and sometimes throw insensitive and below the belt statements causing conflicts.

It is not wrong to stand for the people whom you thought would help make a change in our beloved country. It is our liberty. We can exercise our freedom of speech. We have the right to speak out and tell others of our truth but we need to be cautious and aware of our speech and actions for they are like a weapon with a shard point and edge that when pointed to others, they might get cut. So, before we utter a word, we need to assess if it is appropriate to say.

Isn't it our dream to live in peace and harmony? To be united and live in one accord? To have a harmonious relationship with each other? We know that life is not only about butteflies and rainbows we also face storms but would it be better if we have each other to face storms together?

How to Resolve Conflicts

Can we really evade conflicts?—No. We live in this chaotic world. We battle with it everyday in the different aspects of our lives. We may not acknowledge it but we even have conflicts over trivial matters like:

  • Our choice of food - we don't have the same preference for food. Some people want the guilty pleasure given fast foods, foods that are delicious but unhealthy. There are vegetarians and vegans. The health conscious ones.

  • Clothing - some wants chic-looking outfits, baggy, cozy or even pair of jeans and hoody. Some buy clothes from high-end stores and some are from the thrift stores and it is okay. We wear whatever make us comfortable.

We even have conflicts over the language we speak, the lifestyle we live, possessions, etc. There are lots of contributing factors that causes conflict. Yes, we live with it everday but should we tolerate conflicts?—No. We need to set things right and decide to settle dispute as early as possible before it escalate to something bigger.

How should we resolve conflicts?

  • Address the issue- you need to look into the issue. Acknowledge its root. Where it came from and why it happened. It doesn't mean you need to find solutions to it just yet. Just have the knowledge about it.

  • Open communication - You need to have an understanding with the people you have a disagreement with. It plays a vital role in the reconciliation of the two parties. Talk to them directly in a pleasant manner. Listen to their side of the story the same way they'll hear yours. Be mindful of the choice of words you say. Make sure it paves a way to possitive outcome.

  • Break down your walls - show them sincerity. Ascertain that your talk would be for the benefit of everyone. Let your intention manifest on your gestures and speech. Open up. Be transparent and and don't let emotions stand in your way.

  • Settle the problem- This should be the final step to strike a bargain . Look for a suitable resolution strategy. Lay down your terms and conditions and learn to compromise too.
