Bangla Under Muslim Rule

After the departure of , Lakshmana Sena, the last king of the Sena era, the rule of Hindu kings in Bengal came to an end. Muslim rule then spread to the Indian subcontinent. Today I will discuss about the emergence of Muslim rule in India subcontinent.

The Emergence Of Islam In The Indian Subcontinent :

Indus Conquest :

During the reign of the Umayyad caliph Al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf became the ruler of the eastern provinces. In 612 AD, he sent his son-in-law Muhammad bin Qasim al-Thaqafi on an expedition against the Indus king Dahir.

Muhammad bin Qasim first appeared in the city of Debal in Sindh. He then crossed the Indus and attacked King Dahir at Rawar. Dahir was miserably defeated and killed in battle.

The conquest of the Indus by Muhammad bin Qasim led to the emergence of Islam in the subcontinent. But Islam did not establish as a political force in the subcontinent due to the premature death of Muhammad bin Qasim.

Sultan Mahmud's Of Ghazni Expedition To India :

About 300 years after Muhammad bin Qasim's conquest of the Indus, Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni conducted 17 expeditions to the western part of the Indian subcontinent between 1000 and 1026.  

Muslim Rule In India :

Mu'izz ad-Din Muhammad ibn Sam is known in as Shihab ad-Din Muhammad Ghori in history. Although some historians refer to the Ghurids as a Persian race, the historian Stanley Edward Lane-Poole called them descendants of the Afghan race. When the Ghur Empire was established in Ghazni, Muhammad concentrated on expanding his empire in the subcontinent.

This is how Muslim rule began in the Indian Empire. I will try to highlight the details of Muslim rule in Bengal in my next article.

সেনযুগের সর্বশেষ রাজা লক্ষন সেন এর বিদায়ের পর বাংলায় হিন্দু রাজাদের শাসনের অবশান ঘটেছিলো। এরপর ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশে মুসলিশ শাসন ব্যবস্থা বিস্তার লাভ করে। আজ আলোচনা করবো ভারতে মুসলমান শাসনের আবির্ভাব নিয়ে।

উপমহাদেশে ইসলামের আবির্ভাব :

সিন্ধু বিজয় :

উমাইয়া খলিফা ওয়ালিদ বিন আব্দুল মালিকের রাজত্বকালে হাজ্জাজ বিন ইউসুফ পূর্বাঞ্চলীয় প্রদেশ সমূহের শাসনকর্তা নিযুক্ত হন। তিনি ৭১২ খ্রিস্টাব্দে তার জামাতা মুহম্মদ বিন কাসিমকে সিন্ধু রাজা দাহিরের বিরুদ্ধে অভিযানে প্রেরণ করেন।

মুহম্মদ বিন কাসিম সর্বপ্রথম সিন্ধুর দেবল শহরে উপস্থিত হন। অতঃপর তিনি সিন্ধু নদী পার হয়ে রাওয়ারে রাজা দাহিরকে আক্রমণ করেন। যুদ্ধে দাহির শোচনীয়ভাবে পরাজিত এবং নিহত হয়।

মুহম্মদ বিন কাসিমের সিন্ধু বিজয়ের ফলে উপমহাদেশে ইসলামের আবির্ভাব ঘটে। কিন্তু মুহম্মদ বিন কাসিমের অকালমৃত্যুর কারনে উপমহাদেশে ইসলাম একটি রাজনৈতিক শক্তি হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়নি।

সুলতান মাহমুদের ভারত অভিযান :

মুহম্মদ বিন কাসিমের সিন্ধু বিজয়ের প্রায় ৩০০ বছর পর গজনীর সুলতান মাহমুদ ১০০০ সাল থেকে ১০২৭ সাল পর্যন্ত সময়ের মধ্যে উপমহাদেশের পশ্চিমাঞ্চলে ১৭ বার অভিযান পরিচালনা করেন।

ভারতে মুসলমান শাসন :

ময়েজউদ্দিন মুহম্মদ বিন সাম ইতিহাসে শিহাবউদ্দিন মুহম্মদ ঘুরী নামে পরিচিত। কোনো কোনো ঐতিহাসিক ঘুরীদের পারসিক জাতি বলে অভিহিত করলেও ঐতিহাসিক লেনপুল তাদের আফগান জাতির বংশধর বলে অভিহিত করেছেন। গজনীতে ঘুর সাম্রাজ্য প্রতিষ্ঠিত হলে মুহম্মদ ঘুরী উপমহাদেশে তার সাম্রাজ্য বিস্তারে মনোনিবেশ করেন।

এভাবেই ভারতীয় সাম্রাজ্যে মুসমান শাসনের সূচনা ঘটে।মুসলিম শাসনে বাংলার বিস্তারিত রুপ তুলে ধরবো পরবর্তী লেখাগুলোতে।
