The United Nations decides to observe the day, considering the protection and development of the human environment important, and the day is celebrated with the aim of protecting the environment through political activism and public awareness around the world.

The first environmental conference on the development of environmentalism at the United Nations was held in Stockholm, Sweden on June 5-16, 1972. The goal was to formulate a basic common vision to address the challenges of environmental protection and enhancement. This conference is called the Stockholm Conference. On December 15 of the same year, the UN General Assembly declared June 5 as World Environment Day and created an environmental organization called UNEP (United Nations Environment Program).

Since the first World Environment Day was observed on June 5, 1974, the celebration of the day has created a global environmental platform in more than 100 countries. The day is a big step towards conserving the environment by raising awareness about marine pollution, desertification, ozone layer, soil pollution, global warming. The day is celebrated every year with a special theme in mind. Which draws people's attention to environmental issues.

The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has set the theme for 2018 as 'Prevention of Plastic Pollution'. The main theme of the day was to create awareness in daily life by reducing the use of plastic for natural places, wildlife and their own health.

It can make a significant contribution to protecting the environment from harm by reducing over-reliance on plastics. This is because the widespread use of plastics pollutes the environment and has a detrimental effect on the animal kingdom. Plastics used by humans pollute the environment and adversely affect aquatic, terrestrial, forest and even human health. Excessive use of plastic and its frequent disposal is increasing the level of environmental pollution. Extensive use of polythene bags, household plastics, product packaging, cosmetics plastic, plastic water bottles is polluting nature. This is because plastic is a chemical that does not decompose easily and takes a lot of time to recycle. As a result, it is having a lasting effect on the environment. Since plastics are a waste material, they are spreading everywhere in the forest, water and land and are creating huge obstacles for the habitat and food intake of animals. As a result, it is becoming difficult to sustain the life of the animals in those places. Even some animals are becoming extinct. Not only in the case of animals, plastic is creating various reactions in the human body.

However, despite the actment of the Plastic Prohibition Act, the use of plastic has not diminished. The day will raise awareness and draw attention to the dangers of environmental pollution. Not just plastics, the environment is being polluted for various reasons. As a result of using the environment for their own benefit, the environment has become unsuitable. Which is making future generations insecure. Population explosion is one of the causes of environmental pollution. Massive population growth is putting a lot of pressure on natural resources, water, air and soil. To meet their own food needs, people are clearing forest after forest to create arable land, for which the animal kingdom is directly affected. Many kinds of animals and birds of the forest are becoming extinct. There is a lack of all the necessary elements to maintain the balance of the environment. The use of various chemical fertilizers to increase cultivation is polluting and poisoning the soil by depleting the soil moisture which is damaging the plants and causing various diseases in the human bodybody.

With the advancement of civilization, people are creating various technologies for their own benefit, increasing demand for energy production from which the emitted substances continue to play a leading role in human health and environmental pollution. Smoke from factories and vehicles has made it difficult for animals to survive due to air pollution. The environment is losing its livability due to over-urbanization and increasing vehicle traffic. People are facing various problems including physical illness.
