More than 200 monkeypox cases have been reported in 21 countries around the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed this information today. News AP.

The WHO said in a regular briefing on Friday that many questions about how the monkeypox had spread had not yet been answered. A top adviser to the agency said earlier this week that two recent parties in Spain and Belgium could be behind the outbreak in Europe, the United States, Israel and Australia.

The Spanish authorities said today that the number of monkeypox cases in the country stood at 97. A Madrid government official said a woman was among the victims.

Physicians in Britain, Spain, Portugal, Canada, the United States and other countries say most of those infected with monkeypox are gay or bisexual. However, scientists fear that if the infection is not brought under control, it could spread to others.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States says nine cases of monkeypox have been reported in seven US states. The victims were from Massachusetts, Florida, Utah, Washington, California, Virginia and New York, according to a CNN report. Most of the victims are gay and bisexual. Only one woman in Virginia was infected.

Countries such as Britain, Germany, Canada and the United States are testing the effectiveness of smallpox vaccine to control the outbreak. The WHO is looking into the matter and will issue guidelines soon, they said.

Head of the WHO smallpox department. Rosamund Lewis said not everyone needs to be vaccinated in public. The disease does not spread easily and infection requires skin-to-skin contact. The MonkeyPix vaccine has not yet been developed. However, the UN-controlled health agency estimates that the smallpox vaccine has been effective in about 85% of cases.
