Linus Benedict Torvalds was born on December 28, 1969, in Helsinki, Finland. Linus was son of a journalist couple Anna and Nils Torvalds. Linus is the younger son. Linus's grandfather, Ole Torvalds, was a poet. When Linus was very young, his parents separated. Linas moved to the United States from Helsinki in the 1990s.

Linus's parents named their son Linas after Linus Pauling, a US scientist who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
