A farmer in the Gaza Strip has found a 4,000-year-old sculpture of a goddess while working on his farm. According to Jamal Abu Rida, a spokesman for the Palestinian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, run by Hamas, the sculpture represents the head of the goddess Anat. This goddess is identified in the Puranas as the goddess of love, beauty and war. (NBC News)

Nidal Abu Eid got the sculpture. He found the sculpture last Monday while working on his land in the Karara area, east of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. He told NBC News on Wednesday that he saw the statue while cultivating the land. One of the attractions of the sculpture is the snake inscription on its head, which means it is very important.

The sculpture depicts the goddess Anat as a serpent's crown, a symbol of power and invisibility. The Greek goddess probably served as the inspiration for the war goddess Athena, who is often depicted as being surrounded by snakes. The 6.7-inch-long limestone head is estimated to be approximately two and a half thousand BC. Arrangements have been made to display the sculpture at the Qasr al-Basha, a small museum in Gaza's antiquities department. It has historical significance.

Abu Id says the statue records the history of the Palestinian people on this land and its source is Canaanite. He donated the sculpture to the museum without selling it. Because he thinks it's the Palestinian people.

At a news conference, Jamal Abu Rida, a spokesman for the Palestinian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, said Canaanite, Roman, Byzantine and Islamic civilizations had set foot in the Gaza Strip.
