Here's a nice story that appeared in that beautiful booklet entitled
"Hamburger and Pizza"
Tom Monaghan, founder of Domino's pizza, want to meet his hero, Rat Kroc, founder of McDonald.
In the 13 secret of power performance (Prentice Hall), Roger Dawson tells what happened when Monaghan finally met Kroc.
For years he would call Kroc's office every month to get an appointment, but was never success. Then he heard that kroc, who was by then 78 years old was in failing health.
So Monahan flew to San Diego, determine to stay until he could meet his idol.
His persistent paid off and Kroc's assistant finally granted him a 15 minutes that turned into a 3 hours mutual appreciation meeting.
Kroc peppered him with questions about his operation and impressed Monaghan with how quickly he caught on.
"In no time at all he understood dominos as well as anyone except me."
Suddenly Ray Kroc leaned forward in his chair and said, I'm going to give you some advice.
You have it made now.
You can do anything you wanted make all the money you can possibly spend.
So what I think you should do now is slow down.
Take it easy
Open a few stores every year, but be careful
Don't make any new deals that could get you into trouble.
"Play it safe"
This astounded Monaghan because conversation was the last thing he expected to hear from his hero.
He finally blurted out.
"But that wouldn't be any fun"
Kroc paused and looked hurt.
Finally, he broke into a huge grin and started pumping on his hero hand.
"That's just a what I hope you'd say"
Successful businessman know this principle.
There's no such thing as maintaining one business.
You either continue onwards or lag behind, but you can't stay in the some spot.
When business people come to me and say they plan to maintain their operations at its present level means imminent cut back whether they are aware of it or not. Everybody is moving forward.
The world will not wait for you to recuperate.
Competition is stiff gaining market share is tough.
You have no choice but to move on and grow in the process.
Career people need to learn this lesson too.
You can't say you've got it made.
So what if the corner office is already yours?
So what if that fancy title is now engraved on your private offices door.
You still need to improve your craft. You need to learn.
You cannot afford to sail idly while the rest of the world continue to their engine car moving forward.
The rate of change is accelerating.
Younger people come into the picture all the time.
They are better educated, better informed and better equipped to learn new skills.
They can't wait to boot you out of your office and change those engraved letters to their own names.
It's the same thing again with Tantan. You can't say you know the Bible and have it made.
The question is not how knowledge you are, the question is;
"Are you in a state of growth?"
"Are you bearing fruit?"
Jesus said in John 15:5, "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."
"No fruit"
"No growth"
That's the bottom line.
As popular Bible teacher John MacArthur Jr. would say, "There is no such thing as a non fruit bearing Christian."
Strive for growth. Live your life out loud. Besides, Kroc and and Monghan were right, without growth in business, career or in life, then it just wouldn't be any fun.
