How You Can Have Better Control Over Habits

We try to build a new route through the jungle when we change habits. This article explores how to get out of our comfort zone for the better and change habits.

When we start thinking seriously about doing an MBA from one of the top B-schools, we remember that we do not have the skill sets necessary for corporate life. For instance, managing procrastination, less emotional thought, relationship management, etc. Thus, we understand the need to improve.

We are excited about the transition in the early stages and go for it with 'vim, vigor and vitality.' This excitement fizzles out over time and we return to our comfort zone and then rationalize our inaction.

What's this zone of comfort?

Neuron pathways are formed in our brain when we form a habit, as the habit shifts from the conscious to our subconscious. This becomes a convenient path, a path of least resistance and a familiar path. The more we use it, the more it becomes easier. Often, the psychological reasons for using this direction are entrenched.

When we change our patterns, we strive to build a new route through the forest. We need to cut down trees (overcome self-resistance and others' resistance) and we need to smooth the route (try enough times to try the new method) and become familiar with it.

This is difficult, and we give up in most situations, as the other, familiar route is there.

Even if a new route is formed, we now have choices. The latest one, the untested one, and the checking of the old one. We'll have the old one.

How are we handling this?

Decide if it is the correct direction before even making the first path. My friends at the IAS say it's difficult to agree with politicians for the first time, but it's getting easier. You feel horrible the first time you pay a bribe, and then it becomes easier. A path will be established.

Only after you understand the advantages, build the new path, so that you are inspired to take the new path. A sufficient number of times to walk on it.

Close the old road, so that you are unable to do so even though you want to go down this path.

As an example , take addiction.

Decide not to smoke yourself.

If you start and it becomes a habit, then you need to find an alternative emotion that is more strong than the current emotion, because smoking is also an emotional urge.

Make sure your friends and family are supportive and discourage you from smoking, for a certain amount of days, reward yourself for not smoking, etc. Function in a zone free of smoke.

Teachers often attempt to build new patterns in you. They force you to do things you do not like in order to build a new course, and they force you to get out of your comfort zone. Often you inquire about the intent of the shift, which is a valid tactic, and sometimes you try to resist doing what they say.

You either know better than the Free Articles teachers, or you need to trust them to do the right thing on your behalf.

The range is yours.

It is really hard to quit from something you used to do. Especially when you are doing it for such a long time.
