Whether you are a student or not September just might be the best time to pick up writing. The summer is about to end and people are going to be spending more time indoors and at their computers.

This brings the opportunity for you to earn some extra income while developing valuable skills, building an audience, and increasing your digital presence.

At this point of the year, most of the people who took up writing as a New Years' resolution have already quit and the competition is less fierce. But the time spent consuming content online is increasing.

These are just some of the benefits of starting now. I will give you plenty more and also explain why Medium could be the perfect platform for you.

Earn while you learn

Learning new skills can cost a lot of money. But what if it doesn’t have to be that way? Writing, and creating content, in general, is a great source of side income. And if you are going to learn a new skill or expand your skillset. Why not share your journey and make a buck or two along the way?

Your perspective will always be unique and there will always be someone who is going through the struggles you just went through. And who can explain something better than someone who just went through it? The world is ever-changing and new perspectives on topics are already covered matter.

Writing and sharing your writing online could also improve your learning process and make you more disciplined. Forming your thoughts in a way that will help someone else, will force you to dive deeper and understand the topic better yourself.

There never is a better time to start anything than the current moment. But September might just be the best time of the year to begin creating content.

People are beginning to spend more time inside, the school year is beginning. The following months leading up to Christmas are usually the best months for the online economy. People are ready to learn. Look for presents, quality information, and good entertainment. By starting now you will have plenty of time to build some momentum until December.

When the New Year comes with a lot of new writers popping up you will already have an audience and it will be easier to compete. I started writing in January and the first months were tough. Then came the summer people spending more time outside. It is only now that things are starting to pick up again.

Why Medium?

There are many platforms you can use to put content out into the world. But Medium is by far my favorite.

I choose Medium because it’s very easy to use. And writing seemed less of a challenge to me than starting a YouTube or a TikTok channel. But I have always wanted to create a YouTube channel, and I’ve given it a shot by turning some of my Medium articles into videos.

Medium has a really simple and intuitive text editor. The audience is already there. And the partner program is quite easy to get into.

For me, Medium is a source of side income but some people on here make more than enough to make a full-time living. You can easily get into the partner program during your first month here. Many have done so. I also have written some articles that might help you if you decide to give it a go.

Medium also has a very high domain authority. This means that the articles you publish here are very likely to land on first pages of Google search results.

Develop healthy habits
If you want to become successful as a writer you will need to write. And by write I mean write consistently. This will force you to develop a writing habit. And if you will want to stay ahead of the game you will also find yourself reading more, learning tons of valuable lessons on various subjects like search engine optimization, marketing, or whatever else fascinates you.

By beginning writing online you will become less of a consumer and more of a creator. And this will change the way you look at things and value your time. At least that’s what happened to me.
