The different types of students in the new normal
I have previously written an article How we teach in the new normal class in the higher education, I write about the way we handle classes in the new normal. I actually planned to write this article after that, only that it became one of my drafts, was not able to finish it and thought of another topic to pursue.
But now, I have the willpower to finish it. I have made my own classification of students based on my observation and experience. Maybe some of the students and educators can relate to this.
The Perfect in Attendance Students. These are the students that are always present in the class, may it be announced or unannounced they will really come. I think because they have a stable internet connection and also they are always looking for updates about the class. These types of students are really an encouragement to us because with the student's attendance it shows interests in the class.
The No Show Students. This type is the opposite to perfect in attendance students. These are the students who are not present in the online classes and not participating in the class activities. As faculty, we are reaching out to this kind of students.
The Finalist Students. These are the students who showed up only in the Final Term, they would take the final examination or worst ask for a special examination for the first two terms. In the new normal, we would always verify the reasons why the student is not able to be present in the early days of classes.
The Social Media Active Students. The students that are always active in the social media platforms like Tiktok, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and even post some leisure activities and rants and with no submissions at all. This is sad in our part as faculty because we expect these students to prioritize their studies even its pandemic. But there are some who are always active in social media but not to their classes.
The No Signal Students. These are the students who are living in far-flung areas that do not have signal at all. They just go to "signal area" to check for updates. Because of limited resources, they usually go there, once or twice a week. But I really admired those students who really tried their best to have updates about the class. But there are also students who capitalize the "No Signal" thing to make an excuse for not submitting requirements.
The Informant Students. These students act as the Public Information Officer (PIO) that help in informing their classmates about the activities and requirements. For us, they are really a big help because they keep their classmates informed.
The Achiever Students. These are the students who are really working well in the class, they are the students who are making submissions on time, and they are doing assignments excellently. I have one student whom I really commend, his works are really exemplary, I can see the passion and determination he put in his submissions. In return, I really gave him a good grade that he deserved!
The Work in Progress Students. In our school, the students who do not submit all of the requirements are given WIP grade. It means that these students are given time to comply. But there are students who have WIP grades in the previous semesters, and still want to enroll. We really encourage them to comply first.
So these are the types of students I have in mind, maybe this article will be added through time. These are actually the kind of students we are handling in the new normal class.
So, are you a student? from which type of students do you belong? I would like to hear from you.
