How many of your heard and read news regarding scandals and secrets revealed during online meetings and even webinars? News about news anchors, government officials and other personalities caught on act, making actions that are against the norm during the online meetings were just some of those. This is because this people in the first place were not mindful of the proper netiquettes in attending webinars and online meetings.
In the article of University of Pittsburg, Zoom Meetings: Etiquette and Best Practices, tips for meeting attendees is included and through my observations, those tips are really applicable for attending webinars. So now I am sharing, some of the proper netiquettes of attending webinars based on that article, observations and experience.
Mute the microphone. In attending webinars, one should always be mindful that his/her microphone is muted. More often, microphones not muted cause distraction to the speaker, reveals inappropriate words or others would overhear conversations. It is a must to mute your microphone when not in use. On the other hand, video conferencing platforms have settings on webinars and putting all participants into mute but regardless if it's set or not, just make sure to mute yourself when you are not the speaker.
Use your camera properly. Position your cameras in place that there is proper lighting, if you have a messy place or you don't like your surroundings to be seen on camera, use virtual backgrounds. Avoid making faces, or doing something that would disturb the speaker or that would call other participant's attention. If you have emergency concerns, you can turn off your camera instead. Turning off cameras is also advisable when your internet connection is unstable.
Concentrate on attending the webinar. For you to be able to make most of the webinar that you are attending, you should concentrate and listen to the speakers. Avoid distractions. You should not multitask or do anything else during the webinar. These are the most reasons why scandals are revealed. The attendee is doing something while on the meeting or webinar and not being mindful that the camera is turned on. But then again, if you have some every important matter to attend to, turn off your camera.
Be respectful and wait for your turn to speak. When its time for question and answer or open forums if you have something to say or ask, use the raise hand options or the right channels like chatbox. Wait for your turn to be acknowledged, don't interrupt as a way of respect. Use proper language.
Dress appropriate to the event. Memes and social media trending news of people wearing the upper part only and the down part is different and mistakenly stood up with camera turn on revealing the real scenario. May sounds funny, but we should consider attending webinars as we are attending face-to-face seminars that we should dress appropriately
CONCLUSION
Right attitude when attending webinars is very important. To be able to gain something from the attendance to webinars one should be focused and avoid distractions. Observing proper netiquettes would really help you as an attendee, other attendees and the people organizing the event. One should always be mindful of his/her actions even if the activity is done virtually.
