Happy Fish Kids (HFK) is an afterschool care program in a shoreline community here in the province of Davao Oriental, it started last July 2008. It is a support program for children in basic education to respond to dropouts. It started with student volunteers who act as tutors until it was made known to others who made various sponsorships. The sponsorships includes book donations, supply donations and even educational scholarships.
Two weeks ago, we visited the Happy Fish Kids center for official partnership. We conducted a needs assessment. I have shared to you the importance of needs assessment in this article: The importance of needs assessment in community-based extension activities. We conducted a preliminary interview and distributed survey questionnaires.
We have known that the center was given computers units for the reading program through a donation of women's cooperative. Through the efforts of the center director, they were able to have internet connection as well. The photo below is one of the computers in the center, it is house in a cabinet for safety purposes.The names of the students are also covered for privacy.
The purpose of such donations is to support the HFK community on the new normal way of learning. One of the programs now is Reading Program which aim to support the elementary students to improve in their reading and we would like to support that endeavor.
There are 4 activities that we would like to do in the center.
Technical Support. It would be our commitment to take charge of the repairs and technical needs of the computers. We would conduct scheduled maintenance and downloads of necessary softwares for the program.
Basic Computer Literacy Trainings for Elementary . The target recipients of the. Reading program are. Elementary students, the program is expected to be delivered online due to pandemic, so the elementary children should have basic computer knowledge for them to know how to operate the computer.
Train the tutors. There are tutors for the reading program, since it will delivered online, tutors should be trained on different tools to be used for delivering content and conducting the tutorial sessions.
train the trainers. Training the trainers is training HFK high school. Students to be of help to the elementary students during session times. This way, we can capacitate the high school students so that they could support in the implementation by assisting during trainings and conducting tutorials also to the elementary and beginners.
We will start running the program on May of this year. I will be sharing some activities here. Why I am sharing this to you? Because the story of HFK is an inspiring story, with its humble beginnings, it has now success stories of having able to support students who are now professionals. Maybe some time, the BCH community could also be a part to this kind of endeavors. So if you like to know about this center, just let me know.
CONCLUSION
It takes someone to start a program and for that program to prosper, it should have a support system to help in dissemination and for implementation. We can have our own ways in supporting community programs like this.
