Time flies so fast, I have now a First Grader and Kinder 2 kids. When it was not yet pandemic, they were having a face to face classes. But now, since it is pandemic, they have their school at home and I enrolled them both in schools, in different schools for practical reasons.
So Eilan started his classes 3 weeks ago and Lianne 2 weeks ago. That was the time that we have home quarantine so I really set time for them to be guided in attending to their classes.
1st week of classes - Orientation Week
In the first week of Eilan's class they have the orientation week. During the orientation, the school set up a Zoom meeting for students and teachers to attend and they oriented us about the class rules, grading system and requirements of the school. It is emphasized that the parents have a role in the learning of the students since, they will have their school at home.
For the first week, the school provided us recorded videos about the orientation and character education classes in which they are given Bible stories. Eilan will just watch the video and then listen to the stories and instructions of the teacher. Everyday, we will inform the teacher that he started his classes already. He will also answer in the notebooks assigned for the said subject. They also have art projects related to the stories as well as memory verses. The school provided us also the schedule of classes and expected outputs.
Since his sister do not have classes yet, she also joined his brother in the his classes. My son has an instant classmate, she usually do the singing of songs, listening to stories and making of art works.
The first week of classes went well and his outputs are picked-up by the school bus at Saturday.
2nd week of classes - Math and English Class
For the 2nd week, Eilan started to use his books. For the Math class, they had counting and writing numbers from 1-10 and for English initial sounds and they have short stories too. The teacher has customized and interactive videos that as if they were talking to the child during the classes.
This week was Lianne's orientation week. Their school set up a Google Meet for the orientation on class rules and grading system and the requirements. Her modules are picked up in the pick-up points of the school.
At Friday, Eilan has an online meet-up with his boys classmates and they have actual activities with the teacher. They have meet and greet, sort of online quiz in which they will be answering the teacher's questions through drawings or writing the words. The teacher also has a game the "Show me" game in which they will show what the teacher will ask from them. Eilan enjoyed the 1 hour session and started to learn how to use Google Meet by himself.
This week also Eilan learned the "Bahay Kubo" song. I admire his determination in memorizing the song.
The second week went well as well since we were still at home for the home quarantine.
3rd week of classes - Filipino, Mother Tongue and Araling Panlipunan / Math and English
This week was the formal start of Lianne's classes. The school have modules and specific schedules on which lessons will be answered. She answered Mathematics and English modules.
Eilan's classes for this week is mostly using the "Filipino Language" and he really struggled. My kids used Visayan and English at home so Tagalog seems hard for him. I was there assisting him to understand the instructions as well as the lessons.
I tried simultaneous way of assisting them, but I find it difficult. It is difficult because they have different lessons. So I decided that they will have different schedule. After we finished Eilan's school works, we will proceed to Lianne's.
I also managed to go to the office this week, so Eilan started his class early and I went to the office after we finish his class.
This week also went well, though there are struggles and adjustments made.
Closing thoughts
The first 3 weeks of my kids classes went well, and I really became a teacher of my kids. It takes adjustments, good thing that we have the home quarantine, I was able to plan out, what will be out way of learning when I will be reporting in the office. This time of pandemic, we are really a part of our kid's learning and we should give them time.
There are times that I was supposedly to do things for my self-improvement, for my schooling but I was not able to do it anymore because my time is primarily used for my kids and work. But, I realized that my family should always be my priority, I may not be able to achieve the professional development at this moment, my time will come. In God's time, I will be able to achieve it. I just have to manage my time and should not compromise the welfare of my kids.
Happy Sunday everyone!
