Kabesang Andang
Character Description
In the novel El Filibusterismo, Kabesa Andang was the mother of Placido Penitente. A widowed wife and it’s uncelar to them of what was the cause of death of her husband. She’s one of the cabeza de barangay and originally from Batangas. Kabesang Andang was an understanding and religious woman. She’s devoted and have faith in the power of prayer. Even though she’s already a widow, she did everything just to sent her son , Placido, in school because she had promised to her deceased husband that she would took care of their son and that she would do everything so that Placido Penitente would finish school and become a lawyer. We can read about Kabesang Andang and her relationship with her son Placido in Chapter 19 of the novel.
Archetypal Representation of the Character
Kabesang Andang was one of those woman in the world whom we can called “Ulirang Ina”. Being a single mother is not easy to raise your child alone. Knowing that Kabesang Andang was a widow but we haven’t read that she abandoned her child and go with other men. Instead, she’d did everything to take care of Placido, encouraging him to go and finish school as what she promised to her deceased husband. In chapter 19, we would read there how Kabesang Andang urged Placido to stay in school, however, it only became a source of conflict for them. No matter how she beged, her son refused to listen with her but later jn the said chapter, Placido Penitente agreed with her mother’s suggestion but asking also her to go back to the province which means Placido wanted his mother to leave him.
Kabesang Andang was a picture of an ideal mother. She never surrendered in pursuing her son to go to school despite of how hard life is. She knew that school was the best place in order to achieve her dreams for Placido. Actually she could gave up her promise to her deceased husband. She could took care of Placido without pursuing him to go in school. She could took another man to live if she wanted to. But she didn’t do it. Why? Because it’s not about the promise why she continued to encouraged and pursued her son. It’s not about the promise why she continued taking care of Placido. It’s all about being a mother. Being a mother, it’s her responsibility to take care, to feed, to cloth, and to hope for the good future of her child. The genuine and unconditional love of Kabesang Andang towars Placido made her deserved to be called an “Ulirang Ina”.

What makes a woman an ideal mother, an “Ulirang Ina”? Being a mother is a full time commitment. It is more than giving birth to a child. It’ about loving and caring for a life who completely depends on you for survival. Being a mother is a gift that is unfathomable to any woman out there who does not have a child in their life.
In this present time, there’s still a lot of mother who are like Kabesang Andang. Whether you are a single mother, a single parent, a widow, or a married woman who still have a partner , you can be called an “Ulirang Ina”. It’s not about the status, it’s not about the eligibility. It’s about how you raised your children, how you took care of them, how you cherish and love them and how committed your life to them for being a mother. There’s a lot of Kabesang Andang nowadays not for being a widow. But the representation of being a single parent who solely raised her child. Every mother wants the good for her own child and just like Kabesang Andang who wanted Placido to stay in school, today, they still believe in the power of education. Education is their hope. They believe that when their child finishes his study, they will achieve the dreams they dreamt for.
An “Ulirang Ina” will do everything for her child/children. Even if she sells salt for the whole day, for the future of her child, she will do it. No one can fathom the genuine of mother’s love. I hope all mother are like Kabesang Andang. I hope all mother are “Ulirang Ina”.
