In February 2016, a photo of a dress was trending on social media. This is because the way one sees the color varied from one person to another.Some people saw the color as blue and black, others saw it us white and gold. I personally saw it as blue and black while other relatives in my house saw it white and gold.
The photograph came about when a mother wanted to send the dress to her daughters wedding. After some disagreement on the color of the dress. The bride posted it on Facebook. It went viral within a few days.
Due how different the color of the dress looked like to people. It raised questions.
Does it mean every one sees the world differently
Would change the scientific knowledge we have about the eye?
Eventhough the color of the dress was confirmed blue and black by the retailer, it revealed different perception on human color.
A neuroscientist Jay Neitz said
Our visual system is supposed to throw away information about the illuminant and extract information about the actual reflectance... but I've studied individual differences in colour vision for 30 years, and this is one of the biggest individual differences I've ever seen.
A study published in current Biology shows some amazing statistics. The study, which involved 1,400 respondents, found that 57% saw the dress as blue and black, 30% saw it as white and gold, 11% saw it as blue and brown; and 10% could choose between any above mentioned colour. A small number saw it as blue and gold. Women and older people disproportionately saw the dress as white and gold.
