You can do organic farming even if you are living in towns and cities. You can buy coco peat, potting mix to grow your vegetables and fruits. You can prepare your own organic fertilizer. The best thing about organic farming in urban areas is you can easily manage your organic waste.

You can start a farming business with a small investment. For instance, if you want to do vegetable farming, you can easily start farming for less than $1000. However, you need to have something already for instance agriculture tools, farmland, etc. You also need to do manual labor.

How you can make money by Growing Food or Farming

I do not know how it goes in other countries; however, in my home country, more than 80 percent of people are engaged in farming. In fact, agriculture heavily contributes to National Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and it is the number one source of revenue generation. Farming in our home country has always been a family-based business.

In the last 10 years, when my home country switched to modern farming techniques (aqua phonics or hydroponics for example) a lot of farmers were able to improve their living conditions because their yields substantially grew. Even the urban gardeners who started farming on the terrace and balconies were able to earn extra money.

Yes, farming is very lucrative. The interesting thing about farming is you do not have to own large farmland to benefit from farming. IN the last few decades a lot of technologies have been invented that have farming easy and generate a lot of production from small land areas. These days we can even grow foods in water.

Poultry Business is Profitable

It is easier to raise quails compared to chickens. Chickens need a lot of vaccination and other care, but quails are disease resistant. There is a demand for quail meat and quail eggs. Quail eggs fetch half of the chicken eggs but people tend to eat 2-3 eggs at once, so, the money spent on chicken eggs and quail eggs is more or less the same.

There is a growing demand for turkeys here, therefore, I consider this is one of the profitable agri-based businesses, for the farmers as well as meat sellers. Turkey meat fetches twice the price of chicken. However, the main issue is mortality. Turkeys are imported birds and they are finding it hard to cope with the climate.

Ostrich is a big bird, when the birds you are trying to raise are big you also need big resources. You need at least 5 acres of land in order to raise just 10 ostriches. you will have to spend huge money on feeding these birds (they eat a lot). But the best thing about this business model is it is very profitable, you can sell everything from meat, eggs, to feathers and even poop.

How to Minimize Risk in Farming

If you are a farmer, you will definitely benefit from agriculture insurance as you can use this insurance scheme to insure your crop s well as cattle. Farming comes with great risk as it is heavily dependent on nature (excessive rain, hailstone, etc can destroy your crop). Agriculture insurance helps to recover the losses.

A lot of people believe that borrowing money to start a farming business is very risky. However, this depends on burrowing conditions. If you have borrowed from friends and family and if you do not have to pay the interest on the borrowed amount, it is a good idea to start a farming business with burrowed money. Even when you have borrowed from the banks and if the interest you are paying is very small, it will be a good idea to start a farming business with a bank loan, but if you have to pay higher interest, some farming businesses can be risky, for example, poultry business can be considered very risky due to the high mortality rate of chickens. Here lies the importance of insuring your business.
