Some Favourite Quotes

If we discuss writing, you are quoting when you use a phrase or a piece of someone else's writing in you own text. A quote is normally placed between quotation marks (") and should always be properly attributed. I have previously promised to present some - in my opinion - good quotes, so here we go. My Selection Robert Silverberg, born 1935, is a well-known author mainly of science fiction. *“Know this and know it well: time is never wasted. Wherever we go, whatever we do, everything is an aspect of education. Even when we don't immediately grasp the lesson.”* (Robert Silverberg) George Bernard Shaw, 1856-1950, Irish playwright and critic, who received the Noble Prize in literature in 1925. His influence on Western theatre was massive. *“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world. The unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.”* (George Bernard Shaw) Walter Lippman, 1889-1974, American writer and commentator. He is known for the concept of the "cold war", a term he was one of the first to use. *“Where all think alike, no one thinks very much.”* (Walter Lippman) *Tsutsumi Chūnagon Monogatari* "Tales of the Riverside Middle Counselor", is a compilation of texts by different authors. *“If you looked a little more below the surface of things you would not mind so much what other people thought about you.”* (Tsutsumi chunagon monogatari, 12th century Japan) Hans Bermann, 1922-2003, was a German author and scholar. *The Stone and the Flute,* from which the following two quotations are taken, came 1983. It is a peculiar, complex and fascinating fantasy novel. *'Life is crazy,' said the other mouse, 'and I like it that way. If you haven't happened to notice, why, you're missing the best of it all.'* (Hans Bemmann, *The Stone and the Flute*) *“A hard life? He will learn more of the beauty of life than most, for that's a thing you generally learn only if you don't shut yourself off from whatever seems strange to you.”* (Hans Bemmann, *The Stone and the Flute*) Frank Zappa, 1940-1993, was an eccentric musician, composer and - sort of - philosopher. *“Without deviation progress is not possible.”* (Frank Zappa) Friedrich Nietzsche, 1844-1900, was one of the most important philosophers in Western history. Posthumously appropriated by Hitler, his reputation became ruined and his thoughts sadly neglected. However, judging Nietzsche as a Nazi is grotesque, had he lived in Nazi Germany, he would likely had been confined to a concentration camp. Anyone associating him with Nazism just shows that they have not understood his philosophy. *“All things are subject to interpretation. Whichever interpretation prevails at a given time is a function of power and not truth.”* (Friedrich Nietzsche) *“You have your way. I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it does not exist.”* (Friedrich Nietzsche) Bertrand Russel, 1872-1970, British philosopher, mathematician and political activist, who received the Nobel Prize in literature in 1950. *“It has been said that man is a rational animal. All my life I have been searching for evidence which could support this.”* (Bertrand Russell) O.S.Card, born 1951, American author, best known for his science fiction. *“All songs must end before we can know them. Without borders on a thing it cannot be comprehended as a whole.”* (O.S.Card, *Songmaster*) Anatole France, 1844-1924, French author who received the Nobel Prize in literature in 1921. *“It is better to understand little than to misunderstand a lot.”* (Anatole France) Søren Kirkegaard, 1813-1855, Danish philosopher and theologian. He is often seen as the first existentialist. *“To dare, is to lose one's foothold for a moment. Not to dare, is to lose oneself.”* (Søren Kirkegaard) Oscar Wilde, 1854-1900, Irish playwright and poet, known for his aestheticism. *"Selfishness is not living as one wishes to live, it is asking others to live as one wishes to live."* (Oscar Wilde) Maybe you have your own favourite quotes?
