Fear & Self-Control

It is a common misunderstanding that a brave man is a man without fear. That is not true. Such a man is a fool; in a war he would be the first soldier to die. The brave man is afraid, but defeats his fear, doing what he has to do anyway. Being afraid makes him careful and intensifies his sensory perception; his mind becomes clearer, his concentration stronger, and his reflexes faster. Both mind and body are in a state of increased awareness and efficiency. Fear is essential, even crucial for survival. But it has to be combined with self-control, lest it leads astray completely and becomes a liability, a barrier to growth.

In modern life, many fears are out of all proportion to the corresponding risks. Sometimes there is no risk at all. One of the most common of these fears is to be afraid of failure, often to the extent that an attempt is never made. Usually it has nothing to do with the task of the moment, but everything with the loss of prestige or self-esteem a failure would cause. Yet failures are as mistakes: we can learn from them. Not doing that is a shame, but a failure is not.

Another widespread fear is that of the unknown. Justified to a degree, it is hardly kept within reasonable limits in most cases. It is always easy habitually to choose the safest and best-known course, for no other reason than slight unease or sheer indolence. But if you never take a step into the unknown, if you never tread a new path, you will stop growing. You will never discover anything new, and never learn anything.

I do not mean that one should unreflectedly throw oneself into everything that turns up, just because it is new. That is foolhardy, and would rapidly destroy one's life, one way or another. There are other values to consider, some of which might take precedence. Habitually avoiding the unknown, however, even in small things, when no other cherished values are threatened, and when there is no actual risk, but doing it just because it is easy; that is foolish too.

Self control is the ability to control one's emotions. In other words According to studies, self-regulation, whether emotional or behavioral, was proven to be a limited resource which functions like energy. We need to practice how to control ourselves in term of angers.

Yes, I think we need to practice to obtain self-control. It is not just there by itself; it's something that must be learned.

Self-control, an aspect of inhibitory control, is the ability to regulate one's emotions, thoughts, and behavior in the face of temptations and impulses.

Why do people drink too much, eat too much, smoke cigarettes, take drugs, or have sex with people they've just met? What's to blame for all this bad behavior?

That's a good question, but it is more related to another article of mine, https://read.cash/@Mictorrani/suicide-is-not-painless-debdda30

Fear is in-born in any man, but can be controlled as you've said. Inability to control fear is the most dangerous thing.

It is dangerous for as well the one who fears as the environment. People with uncontrollable fear often get in panic and lose all common sense.

I have virtually no fear, when you understand quantum mechanics and the way the universe is created, you understand your pure energy and immortal, only an actor on a stage playing out this role for a short time.

Or everything just goes black, either way it's there is no use in fearing death.

One can mean two different things when talking about fearing death.

  1. Fear of death itself, of the condition of being dead. That is what you are talking about. And I agree, there is no reason to fear that.

  2. Fear of the process of dying, a process that, apart from going black, at least sometimes is painful. That is fear of the experience of dying, or of the suffering included in the process of dying. Understanding quantum physics will not help there.

In doing the initial self-control we must do is that we should be able to control our hearts, because the heart is very powerful over insight, thoughts, actions, someone as an example; when anger rises, the mood often becomes unrestrained. the pressure that keeps piling up continues to swell until it reaches its boundary point, and continues to pile up, approaching the unbearable critical point.

A very true and reflective piece.

Fear is certainly one of the greatest limiting factors we face in the quest to reach our dreams;. While the strength gained by finding the courage to overcome our fears, one of the most liberating experience we can have.

Without fear we would not grow and without courage we can not be free.

Thank you for this important reminder in this time of disproportionate fear.

Now we as human being, need to acknowledge our fears; our fear of a virus, our fear of death, our fear of pain, our fear of what others may think of us, and find the courage to live our lives free of the tyranny of fear both within us and without.

Thank you for sharing.......go well.

Very wise words. Actually, you mention something very important here, that we must acknowledge our fears. It must begin there. Only when have done that, we can defeat them as well. Thanks for your comment, which really added value here.

People should work on trying to come to terms with their fears and perhaps get rid of them if they are irrational. But some fears serve a purpose.
