Different Versions of Same Articles in Read.Cash

44 55

I think it must be made clear to all that each article now comes in different versions here at read.cash. This has also caused difficulties with comments. As I am sure you have seen, there are different sets of comments for each article; one set for each community the article appears in, and a last one called just "Article" which is outside of any community.

The big problem is this last one. Comments made there earn no points, and thumbs up or views will not give any BCH even if they would become many. That article is outside of the whole system with points and BCH. Let's call it the "dummy version".

To make it worse, it is a link to this last dummy version that goes out in notifications and it is the first link going out in the feed when an article has been posted.

If you click a username to see all articles by an author, you also get links only to the dummy version.

The consequence is that a majority of comments and thumbs up are at this non-rewarding article!

What can you do to avoid this?

If you open an article through the link in a notification. Change to a community version of that article, if such a one exists, BEFORE you comment or give thumbs up. In my own articles, I will add a link to a community version at the bottom of every article published today and on.

If you open through the feed, be sure to open articles where there is a community (named in a blue field on top left). If there is no such blue field, the link leads to a dummy version.

I hope that read.cash will soon find a solution to this problem. I know they are working on it, but it is not altogether easy to resolve.

UPDATE 12 June 2020 : Read.cash just wrote in a comment to another article of mine:

"We're releasing a new update right now that will now fix what you asked for. If you use "Write for the community" button or add communities in the article editor - the notification will not be sent until one of the communities approve your submission and the URL will lead to that submission. Also works for auto-approved submissions."

UPDATE 19 June 2020 : Read.cash just wrote in a comment that affiliate links do not lead to the dummy any longer. Neither do boosts.

But still links to the three other articles by the same author at the bottom of each article, and the links you find in an author's profile lead to the dummy, as far as I understand it.

NOTE: If you have reached this article by a link indicating "article" without the community in blue (top left) in the feed, your comments will not give any points. Be sure first to open the community version: https://read.cash/@Mictorrani/different-versions-of-same-articles-in-readcash-f873d96c That's the place for comments and thumbs up.

What happens to the articles when the Community disappears or become inactive? I usually try to Submit my article to a Community after I have published. I am never sure if it will be approved. So I publish first and then submit. Is that the best way to do this??

I suppose so. I have several communities myself, so I always publish in one of my own - and then I submit at the same time as publishing. But otherwise I think it's best to do as you say.

If a community is inactive, the articles being there stays there, if nobody removes them. However, if a community is deleted, there will be problems, (I have deleted communities two times, so I have experience of that.) The articles disappear. That is, they still remain in the system, but they cannot be found or opened. It's necessary to contact Read.cash and get their manual help to restore the links. (At least it was so when I did it.) Thus it is not good to delete a community with articles in it, it is better first to remove the articles so the community is empty when deleted.

I always thought of the Communities, like the Chambers and the Channels on Noise.Cash. I thought it was great way of organizing your content, if like me, you write about variety of topics.

Now I'm scratching my head. Some of the communities I used to submit to have disappeared. I'm not so sure I should Submit my articles to any community anymore. I'm thinking that I should go back and remove all of my articles from the various communities. It seems less confusing that way.

I also write about a variety of topics, and I started communities a long time ago to better organize my own material. A change in the rules here, made me open them for selected others, although you see a couple of my communities contain only a few articles not by me (especially that about Japanology and that about health). In some others, I have a more open policy. You can see all my communities here: https://read.cash/@Mictorrani/my-communities-their-rules-ccff0c97

Then the rules changed again, so I could have kept my communities for me alone, however, that was too late to change back.

Then the communities became as Read.cash itself, too chaotic, so I created an index, which you can see here: https://read.cash/@Mictorrani/index-over-my-articles-at-read-cash-5f7c1e34 - and I refer to that in the end of all my articles. It is not a perfect solution, and it, too, is gradually becoming chaotic, but I want some means to keep my production here in order and so that readers can find old articles about the topics that interest them.

If you write about variety of topics, perhaps an index is something for you? Not at least if you remove your articles from all communities.

I have become concerned about using Communities at all. Actually I found out that the search engine at this site works really well! So what I did was start putting keywords in my article title. For example: “My Foodie Luv”. It make it easier for me to search for a quick list of my food-related content and I can also direct others to my content that way. Like you say … it's not a perfect solution. Sometimes other article appear in the search results. But for the most part, I can direct others to my similar articles. It's doable and seems to be working.

I hardly ever use the search engine, perhaps I should start doing that.

I didn't really take note of this before now... I just went through my articles page and saw they didn't have any tag... and that's where i have been directing my viewers to to read my content... thanks for this notice... really appreciated

I understood that most members didn't realise how this worked. That's why I wrote this post Still you comment on the dummy now and get no points for this comment. Otherwise there is a link in the bold part in the end of the article.

This is the only solution available now for this problem. Either like you just did adding that link. or searching it yourself in the community which is a waste of time.

Yes, better adding the link. But you must be quick. First publish. Then get the link. Open and edit the article and insert the link. The link doesn't exist until you have already published the dummy.

Yeah. Read.cash team should solve this problem as soon as possible, I wonder how long it's going to take.

This is a really nice observation, a lot of people are not aware of this. Thanks very much for bringing it to our notice and I hope read.cash management are working on this

They are, I know, I have been discussing it with them before via email. But it is not trivial, so it may take some time.

Thanks for the information.

It's quite different than before and also confusing when you want to check the article as moderator.

Think time is needed to appreciate changing

Yes, it is confusing. And yes to your next statement too: it takes time to appreciate change. But I don't think anyone will appreciate the conditions as they are now, no matter how long time we give them. It is not intended to be like this, it is a result of a temporary solution to an unexpected consequence of other changes. That's how I understand read.cash's information in an email to me. There will be more changes before everything is ready.

Regards to the frenquence of updates made by the Read.cash team I can't disagree.

I think they do a great job in emergency, sure it will be fixed soon.

Thanks for this article. It is really problematic. Suddenly i noticed that i get no point for commenting in the author's article. So i just click the name of the community after reading the article when i need to comment.

Yes, that is one way to handle it. But it is still cumbersome. We hope readcash will soon have fixed this somehow.

You even have to write a comment in a community immediately so that you can switch to that community. Otherwise you have to search the article in the community, which is sometimes difficult.

Yes, searching in a community is difficult. But a a new article can usually be found if you just click "New" when you open the community.

Yes, but this only works for new articles and not always. When I am looking for older articles it is cumbersome.

Yes, indeed. Very cumbersome. That's why I said long ago that I don't want a single community to have too much material. Better divide too large a community into two or more.

Spot on. I am relatively new here but I have also felt what you discussed in the article. I believe read cash will so do something about it

They are working on it. As I wrote in a reply to another comment here, it is not intended to be like this; it is just temporary.

This is quite complicated. They must fix that somehow, but it's not easy since the system is completely based on these dummy articles from the beginning.

Also, notifications have been working correctly for some time too, i.e. if you select a community when writing an article - notification won't be sent until submission is approved and the link sent is the link to the article in community.

They have changed this a little since I originally wrote this, as you can see from the updates, but there is still a dummy and the author's profile and the links to three articles that always turn up at the bottom of every article, still lead to it. However, the point system has also been changed so you won't get direct points for comments in the same way, and comments from different versions have been merged. That is, you will see all comments on all versions of the article.

I visited your profile because I want to learn too what your articles are all about. And in this 1st article I read, I already learned something. I never knew this before. Thank you for sharing. I'm going to read more of your works. I'm sure I will learn a lot 💗
