Should I be guilty being thrifty?
We all want the best for our kids, that's the line that most parents say. Well being a first time mom, I would say the same thing too but sometimes there's one thing that's running in my head recently.
Am I being too thrifty for my child?
That's the question that's been running in my head for quite some time now. I've been seeing acquaintances and friends on Facebook who recently gave birth and I know that there's nothing wrong in flaunting baby stuff. Well, I know that it's not their intention when they posted it but I can't deny for myself that maybe I am being too thrifty when it comes to Lil B's things or toys.
Hand-me-downs
Honestly, me and my husband are not a fan of brand new stuff. I usually buy shoes or clothes in the thrift store or sa Tiangge. My husband usually buys 2nd hand electronics. Me as I have observed my niece growing up, I somehow got an idea on what should I invest on.
Well, I've been always so proud that I was able to safe at least for Lil B's things. Let us check if what items we bought 2nd hand and brand new.
Crib
This is a brand-new crib, that we got for 800 pesos. I bought the Uratex foam separately for 500 pesos. I know that this type of crib is not very sturdy but it still served its purpose to us. I've read one comment from a Facebook group that I joined, someone advised not to buy a crib if you plan to co-sleep, which quite true so to say. We've been using this crib as a changing station up until Lil B's 5months, from 6 mos up to now we are now using it as her play pen or where she can practice how to stand up on her own. She still doesn't sleep on it unless I put her down in the crib.
Baby rocker/high chair
I bought this together with a stroller in Carousell for 3500. I was kind of a bit sad that we weren't able to attach the desk on the rocker anymore but we've been using the rocker from the day 1, the stroller not so much as we cannot go out.
Clothes
Most of her clothes are hand-me-downs from my niece, some are from my friends too. I still bought her a few brand new clothes too, but that was just recently as most of the clothes are already a bit tight to her already.
Walker
It's also from my niece, I borrowed it from my sister as my Lil B really cannot stay still sitting and lying down.
Baby Carrier/sling
This one really helped me, got it from Carousell too. It looked like it hasn't been used though, maybe the seller purchased it but since there has been lockdowns they weren't able to use it. It also smelled like moth balls when I got it. hahaahhaahha
My sister also let me use their sling from Tiny tots. I still use both the sling and the carrier up until now.
Nail trimmer
Another purchase from Carousell, 2nd hand and barely used.
Cloth diapers
Some of the cloth diapers I purchased were from Shopee, Carousell (but I sold it) and from cloth diapering groups on Facebook. I am glad that we were able to start cloth diapering on her 3rd month so and have my permastash on her 4th to 5th month. Now we have 40 cds and we can maximize the use up until to her 2 to 3 yrs or up until I potty train her.
Feeding bottles/storage bottles
Since my sister breastfeeds my niece, they barely use the bottles. On my part, I was able to bottlefeed Lil B up until my breastmilk stash runs out. Now I am already direct latching as I don't need the feel to pump , Lil B is also eating solids so that's also a big help. hihi
Toys
I haven't purchased much toys for her. We have a lot of stuffed toys that we kept years ago. I buy toys that she can already put on her mouth as she is already teething and that's what she mostly do aside from standing up.
I know that it's not really important to buy expensive stuff for your kids but sometimes it just hits me as I see other kids having this and that and I don't. Maybe I still want to wait to the point that we can already know what she likes so we can buy things that she would really enjoy. For the meantime, she loves playing with us, I mean she likes physical activities.
I'll make it up to you soon Lil B, what matters most is taking are of you the way that I can. Maybe saying this to myself just to ease my mind but we are still very lucky that we are still able to get a few things like this.

I am thrifty too, I don't spend much on materials things. For me your just being practical and wise. If I am on your situation, I would do the same too
