The Virtual Hoax
I actually wonder sometimes what Zuckerberg must have been thinking when he was coding Facebook. Did he actually think about the possibilities, the long term, the effect it will have on people and human relations? I don't think so. He might have felt he was doing the world kindness, and maybe so, but what we have come to know as social media today is definitely not what he was thinking of. The social media networks keep coming up with different tools and upgrades to keep users stuck on the platform, but of course, that's good for business.
The supposed original intent behind social media was to connect the world. Today, social Media has evolved to such great lengths, that the actual connection Zuckerberg was aiming for when he started is now on the back foot.. Today, the unwritten underlying business model of these Medias are based on a 'belong' culture. This is why in every social network, there seem to be niches and cliche. Today, the virtual world of social media has become a place where we can live our fantasies and call it truth. In doing this we put other diligent hardworking people under undue pressure and depression, causing them to feel like a failure. It's really bad.
We almost now have two lives; our real lives where we are probably middle class and the 'gram' life where we live so lavishly, you would think Bill Gates works for us. This fake life is driven by the need to belong in a certain cycle, to feel special. But the actual underlying drive is to hide our behavioral inadequacies. We become things we are not just to belong in certain cycles, to have many followers to feed our need for approval. In doing this, we tend to be willing to do or say anything, as long as it appeals to the target audience, with no recourse to checking it legality or morality. Here's an example.
' Nicky, a self-styled sex therapist and host of Kumasi’s ‘ABN Radio One’ has confessed to sleeping with a groom a night before and after his wedding.
The popular broadcaster who was speaking on Kumasi-based Angel FM’s ‘Angel Drive’ program, revealed that the groom was her ex-boyfriend and she had no regrets since life is meant to be enjoyed once.
She said; "I slept with a groom before his wedding even though I was a bridesmaid… I went to the wedding, spent his money on them, and slept with him again after the ceremony. I never mentioned that to the woman and she doesn’t need to know. Life is only intended to be lived once, so enjoy it.”

Imagine the nonsense that someone would dare brag about just to please her followers? How's this a thing to be proud about? Is she saying living like a ho is the only way to have fun or enjoy life? It's appalling. To think someone can go online, to brag about her betrayal, her list, and her lack of fear for anything good, sacred and decent just goes to show how much we've decayed on a society.
Conclusion
might not really make the connection. But I just want to decry two things in one article. The seeming dearth of moral values in our society and the fake life we live in our virtual spaces. I don't really see why people think they have to forgo all morals and go to any length to pretend they are what they are not, just to please other people online, whom they will probably never get to meet in this life time or the next.
I do not believe everything I see on social media, especially Instagram. We have photoshopped and filtered apps that can alter someone's body and face. It is a bit scary.
