Do You Still Want To Tweet?? Part Two
I started this article yesterday and quite frankly there's so much to say on it. So,I'm continuing. You can find the first part of the article here
Making Twitter's Code Open Source
There's thus belief amongst the poor and middle class, that the rich can afford to and do throw money at things, just because.. This couldn't be farther from the truth. The rich, unlike the poor and middle class have no need for appearances. They are rich and we all know it, so they don't need the fanciest cars, gadgets or anything to prove it. It's the poor and middle class rather, that will take the little they have to sponsor an appearance of wealth; just sad. Where am I going with this?? I'm just trying to establish that Musk wouldn't throw money at a thing for the fun of it, and that's certainly not what he did with twitter..
He's claimed or there's a claim that he's going to make twitter's 'almighty' code open source. Well, if that's not the lie of the century, I don't know you what is, as a matter of fact, nothing comes close.
Twitter, much like it's tech competitors like Facebook, wechat, tik-tok and even google have some of the most complex, sophisticated programming in the world, with thousands, if not millions or even hundreds of millions of lines of code. To even be able to analyse the entire program and codes of such software would require a whole different adaptation of data science application. Now, if you think someone is going to release that as open source, you must be easy to fool. I don't mean to offend of course, but come on bro, how do you believe such sh*t?
Think of this. There's this fast food that makes extremely good and very highly priced burgers. In the whole town, no one makes anything remotely as good as this burger, hence it commands a really hefty price, that a whole lot of people are willing to pay due to limited supply and accessibility. The reason for this is simply a secret recipe and a whole different formula of combination of ingredients that makes up the burger.
Then the owner of this fast food wakes up one very unfortunate morning ( don't mind me for saying unfortunate, but in my defence, one would need to be really unfortunate to be this stupid), and decides to make this secret formula as well as the secret ingredient, public knowledge, with the expectations that this will cause a rise in profits. Does any of these make sense to you?? Absolutely not! The owner would have to be at the height of stupidity and 'unfortunateness' to do something like this.
The Elon Musk I know is neither of those. Making twitter's code open source will be Elon shooting himself on the foot. Twitter would automatically become not just unprofitable but relatively useless in the business community. Unless his desire is to flush $44billion of which he's going to be borrowing almost half, down the drain, he definitely would not even consider doing this, even in the most remote sense of it. Not to mention, I doubt his american banking partners would stand by and watch him play games with their investors money. Let's say hypothetically, he was to be stupid enough to actually do it.
We're living in a time where people are beginning to see the need for more of the same. Take the streaming industry for example. There are people who are usually subscribe to more than two providers before now. But the economic effect of the pandemic and rising cost of energy across the western world and runaway inflation in developing and underdeveloped world is forcing people to choose only those at the top of the chain of preference. This has seen a decrease in the number of new subscribers of such services even for market leader, Netflix.
Due to these same factor, more and more people are paying attention to their data consumption. Before now, we all fancied using all the social medias for their uniqueness, but today, we are having to choose some and give up some. With a situation like this, if twitter were to make it's code open source, every other social media platform will just copy and paste into their code. What that simply means is that, instead of having both facebook and whatsapp on my phone, I'll just have facebook only. After all, there'll be nothing twitter can do that won't be in Facebook, cos they would have copied the code.
Conclusion
The decision to make twitter code open source is actually not going to be good for anyone. That will be the end of twitter as e know it.
Writing these past few days has become increasingly hard due to Rusty's withholding. I don't know if rusty is broken or something, but It's beginning to get to me much. I hope it gets better soon. This is definitely not the time for his dramas.
Thanks for reading....
I hope Elon musk is kind...for all we know he just liked to spend money and decided to do it through Twitter...who knows?
