Today I want to discuss about some factors whose are affecting protein utilisation. So let's start💕
Amino Acid Balance:
An excess of one amino acid may in certain circumstances, reduce the total nutritive value. It is now recognized that relative amino acid requirements vary with age. Therefore the value of the pattern of amino acids in a specific food or diet towards prompting growth will vary considerably depending on a person's age.It is the ratio of the amino acid to nitrogen in a food relative to the ratio of the need for that amino acid to nitrogen that determine how useful a particular protein is in meeting the protein requirement. Therefore a protein may have an amino acid pattern that meets the needs of one age group, while it may be relatively limited in meeting the needs of another age group.
Calorie intake:
The protein content of the diet cannot be evaluated without consideration of the adequacy of the caloric intake. When the caloric intake drops below a certain critical point, protein will be deaminated and used as a source of energy and cannot be used for the synthesis of tissues.
Immobility :
The ability to synthesise protein is greatly reduced among people who are immobile.Elderly who are bedridden lose protein mass even when dietary protein and energy seem adequate. There has been a similar problem among astronauts, who lose protein as a result of both weightlessness and immobility in space flight.
Injury:
An increase in nitrogen loss after injury is well documented. High protein intakes either before or after injury do not prevent this loss. However, losses are recovered more rapidly once healing begins.
Emotional stability:
Emotional stresses such as fear, anxiety or anger increase the secretion of epinephrine from the adrenal gland, which in turn causes a series of changes that result in the loss of nitrogen. Students lose nitrogen under the stress of exams.Other stresses that can result in nitrogen loss are severe pain, emotional anxiety, reversal of biological rhythms caused by night shift work, extreme cold and jet travel across time zones.
