Bell's Palsy, know about it!!

Maybe not all know that we maybe have experience this problem before. Bell's Palsy is a condition that cause the muscle to weak and paralyzed in face. It is a common nerve disorder and only affect the nerve in the face (facial nerve). In most cases of Bell's Palsy, the nerve that controls the muscles in one side of the face has been damaged due to inflammation of the nerves located in the ear. Reactivation of herpes virus infection is a major cause of Bell's Palsy. Studies show that this activation can occur due to trauma, environmental, metabolic and emotional. Bell's Palsy will not cause a stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack(TIA), but stroke and TIA can cause muscle spasms in the face.

Bell's Palsy symptoms

  • Feels heavy on the face causing it to become weak or paralyzed. This makes it difficult for you to close your eyes on some of the faces involved.

  • Drooling

  • Lost sense of taste

  • Feeling pain in or behind our ears

  • Sensitive to sound

  • Eyes problem, like excessive or dry tears

Whose at risk??

Bell's Palsy affect like one in 5000 people in a year. It is mostly occur to those age 15-60 years old and affect in both gender ( female and male). Even though it can occur in both gender, pregnant women will mostly affect by Bell's Palsy 3 time or more.

Bell's Palsy effects

Bell's Palsy will not make any body parts become weak and numb. 3 out of 10 people with Bell's Palsy illness will continue to feel weak in their face nerve and 2 out of 10 people will be affected for a long time affected. About 80%-90% Bell's Palsy patients recover from it without any after effects in 6 weeks to 3 months.

Treatment

  • Corticosteroids- reduces inflammation and should be started within 3 days from the onset of symptoms.

  • Eye drops and eye patches (for dry eyes)

  • Physiotherapy exercises for the faces.
