Do you have extra time, or do you want to have a quick break from your daily routine?

This article aims to provide individuals, especially to the girls out there, with a list of the hobbies you may opt to do when you’re having a rough day or a hazy mind. Aside from the fact that these things clear your mind and brighten up your mood, these are also productive. A set of hobbies for the boys will be shared later this evening.

1. Crocheting

Crocheting is the art of turning yarns into different items using a hook. It is believed that crochet is a very ancient form of embroidery that developed from Chinese needlework. Crocheting started in the mid of 1800s.

Materials needed:

  • Crochet hook

  • Yarn/thread

  • Tape measure

  • Scissors

  • Stitch markers

  • Crochet book

If you’re new to this craft, a crochet book would be very much helpful to guide you with the basic knots and techniques that you should know. Nonetheless, it’s okay if you don’t have one because the internet contains many tutorials you can choose from.

It is important to have patience and passion in crocheting so that you’ll end up with a great piece.

Projects you may create:

  • Coasters

  • Table runners

  • Earrings

  • Tops/Cardigans

  • Baby dresses

  • A lot more!

Advantages of Crocheting:

1. Crocheting keeps the mind active.

2. It also helps with depression and boosts self-esteem.

3. It makes you creative and relaxed.

4. It keeps you away from bad habits.

5. It helps in building an artistic community where you can help others.

2. Gardening

Fruits or flowers, won’t you want to see them in your home?

Gardening is a hobby that will get you closer to the nature. If you live in an apartment, it’s not a problem because you can still grow plants in pots. You may choose between having ornamental plants or growing herbs, vegetables, and fruit-bearing plants and trees so you can have something to harvest and consume after such time.

Tools Needed for Gardening:

  • Digging tools such as shovels, spades, and fork

  • Watering tools such as watering cans or sprinklers

  • Cutting tools such as scissors, axes, or scythes

These are the primary tools needed. Having one of each section is already good enough. If you grow plants from seeds, it is also a must to have a seedbox where you will grow them until it will be transplanted on the soil or pot.

Here are some of the simple tips to consider:

1. Before planting, have a research on the plant about its:

  • Preferred climate

  • Need of water

  • Kind of soil needed

  • Plant care

2. Cultivate the soil more often. Check also if there are fungi that will be affecting your plant. Prepare an insecticide to fight it.

Advantages of Gardening

  • Gardening is physically sound. It helps in burning calories, and it lowers down blood pressure too.

  • It also has benefits in our mental health. It helps with anxiety and relieves stress.

  • It can also help us save money when we harvest.

  • Spending time at your garden or lawn is good for the bones, especially when you’re exposed to the morning sun.

3. Learn Origami

Origami can be traced back to the Japanese thousands of years ago. Origami is simply the art of paper-folding. This hobby is fun and relaxing when you want to have a quick break from the world. As a beginner, you might start by following simple patterns. You could also use recycled papers such as newspapers and old magazines.

Projects you can make:

  • Origami butterflies and put them on the wall

  • Origami flowers perfect on a vase

  • Origami animals as kids’ toys

  • Geometric origamis as decors on parties

Advantages of Making Origami:

  • It improves someone’s ability to think and follow instructions

  • Making origami sharpens memory and boosts creativity

  • It is fun and uses ideas inclined to fractions and geometry

  • Low cost supplies to start

Origami is best taught to children!

4. Baking

Baking is one of the best activities done especially when you’re stuck at home, however, this hobby needs a lot of materials to start. There are many pastries and recipes to choose from and as a beginner, you can try with the simple ones to have an idea and learn from it.

Materials needed:

  • Hand mixer

  • Food scale

  • Measuring cups and spoons (liquid and dry)

  • Spatula

  • Baking pan

  • Pastry brush

  • Wooden spoon

  • Wire wisk

  • Oven

Note: You don’t have to complete the checklist. If you can find an alternative, you can start right away.

Advantages of Baking:

  • Baking allows you to express your emotions.

  • It uplifts your creativity.

  • It creates a connection between your mind and body.

  • You get to make sure that what you eat is clean.

  • Save money by not ordering outside.

You can start by following recipes that you can find in cookbooks and on the internet but as you continue this activity, you’ll soon get to adjust the measures according to your preference and make your own taste.

These are the activities that I recommend you to do. I hope I gave you the principal facts that would let you engage in these productive hobbies, especially that many of us are still in home quarantine.

Remember, follow what your heart says and do all things with love.
