The Kids in the Fields

40-year-old farmer, Thomas and his 14-year-old son, Zeke, was currently planting rice in their field. They were under sun all day since there are only two of them working. No one wants to go outside that day since all are scared about the news that circulated the town the other day.

It is said that another farmer named Ramon was currently on his way home as the sun went down. When he was walking down the fields as his house is in the other side, he heard laughter. But as he looked around, no one is seen anywhere. He was unsure and he thought that it might be his tiredness that make him hear unbelievable things. He walked once again, but again, laughter is hears again. That moment he was sure that there are people who are laughing behind him. But it was no ordinary laugh, it was coming from voices of kids. Scared to what he might see, he run as fast as he can to his home. Ramon told his family about what he heard and his family got scared as well. The next morning, the town was in gossips as Ramon told everybody what happened.

On the other hand, Thomas was not easily scared. He didn't believed in it since he had been working in the fields ever since he was a kid. He never experienced something like that. And also, they had to make money so if he will be just get frightened by what happened to Ramon, his family will suffer from hunger.

The sun is starting to set down. He told Zeke that they need to go home now since his wife is already waiting for them. They packed up the things and tools they used during the all-day work and started walking home.

As they made their way home, laughter of children was heard from the back. As they turned around, the laughs continued. It even felt like the children were running and playing in the fields. Zeke hold on to his father as he is starting to get scared. Thomas told him to not mind the laughs and continue walking. But as they walk, the laughs' sound are getting loud. It feels like the children were on their back. Thomas then grabbed his boy and started running. Not knowing where to go, Thomas just want to get out of the fields as he worry about his son. They passed by a huge tree and hide in there. From there, they were seeing white figures of 5 young kids playing in the fields. Ramon's story might be true Thomas thought.

He and his son watched the kids as they were disturbed by old men. In there, the men then grabbed all of them, put sacks to cover their faces and tie them up. One of the old man seemed so familiar for Thomas. Soon he realized that it was the owner of the field whom who pays him every time they harvest, Sir Marcus. After tying the kids, there were killed by a gun and their blood were dropped in every field. The kids were sacrificed to the fields to make bountiful harvests.

"What are you doing in here?"

Thomas and Zeke turned around to the voice. It was Sir Marcus.
