Kids in Prison (A Mother's Child)

Carroll Cole

This story is a true representation of how bad parenting outcomes to bad children. I’ve seen my own neighbors that are very cruel or unkind to their children which can be a sign of discipline or maybe they are just not really good parents after all. Because if they really cared on their child, they will do punishments in the way their children will learn and not built hate on them and on other people.

Carroll Edward Cole who first committed his crime when he was 8-years-old by drowning another boy of the same age in a lake in Richmond, California, was born in Sioux City, Iowa. His family moved to California soon after his little sister was born. His father LaVerne, was a soldier in World War II. As for his mother, Vesta, while his father is away, she had several affairs to other men and even threatens and beats him if he said a word to his father. Vesta is really abusive towards Carroll. There were even reports that she would carry her son to her men. She even dressed him as a girl which made Carroll the center of bullying at school. Bullying also circulated as he has a “girl’s name”.

Because of such bad experiences he’s been dealing with in and outside his home, he developed a mental habit that everyone in the world is bad and can be worst. According to him, “I was primed, I had made the mental commitment I was going to get even with my mother, and things just built up and built up and became an obsession.”

The first crime he committed was not found until his confession when he was in prison through an autobiography.

During his teens, his actions worsened. He attacks couples in cars, got arrested for drunkenness, theft and was even released from the U.S. Army for having a bad conduct. Because of his behavior towards people, he was sent to a mental hospital. Doctors found a mental disorder on him and they thought that he was too afraid of a female figure, which makes him kill them before doing something on them. The disorder is called “Antisocial Personality Disorder”.

Years went, Cole went on to marry a woman named Billie Whitworth but got divorced when Cole burned down a motel they were staying in once. He was arrested but later on released from prison. But numerous crimes still went on. In total, he killed fifteen women and one boy.

He was convicted of three murders in 1981, sentenced to life at Huntsville Prison and was sentenced to death through Lethal injection.

I think Carroll could have not done such crimes if he was guided in the right way by his mother. His mother could have been a good example to him but she wasn’t. Though, I think most of his crimes were influenced by his mother’s behavior, I think it was him alone, to do his actions that made him to be that bad. He grew up and by that I think he developed a mind for him to teach him the difference between the good and the bad.
