Moonlight – Academy Award Winner for Best Picture talks about the main’s characters youth, adolescence and early adult life. It focuses on the main aspect of sexual orientation and identity. This is an LGBTQ+ inspired movie with a lot of perceptions towards drug addiction and how words are used to attack people in the gay industry. This movie is cited as one of the best films in the 21st century, winning different big awards including three Oscars and one Golden Globe Award.

83 Days – A 2018 movie about the true-to-life story of the youngest American to ever be sentenced to death by an electric chair. It talks about George Stinney Jr who was convicted of the murder of two white girls aged 7 to 11. The trial only lasted hours after with all white people in the court including all of the judges. Stinney’s family was also not allowed to visit him during his imprisonment. A reopening of the case was filed in 2013 after George Fierson, a local historian, started researching about it. Gaining the attention of other lawyers, several historical documents, evidences and witnesses are to assist in hoping to clear Stinney’s name.

Get Out – A 2017 movie about Chris, an African-American man who decided to pay a visit his Caucasian girlfriend’s, Rose, family during the weekend. Appearing to be a normal family at first, the intentions were not decent as it is. Chris started to question everything after his observance to the family’s “slaves”. Later on, Chris discovered that Rose had been dating several black people including the maid in the house. This Jordan Peele movie won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. This movie will give you chills and realization to what can be happening to the world right now.

Drumline – A Charles Stone III movie that is about a drumline that brings music through marching bands that is popular black Southern colleges. The movie inspires every dreamer out there despite the consequences that may happen along the way, including a fight not only with how music is produced but personal talks also. The movie stars Nick Canon and he played a very noteworthy role about being sport to bring the energy of the drums.

12 Years a Slave – A story about a free African-American man, Solomon Northup, that works as a violinist to make a living for his wife and two children. He was then offered an employment as a musician if he will travel with the two white men who offered him, only to find out he was going to be drugged and delivered to a slave hutch. Given the identity, Platt, he was sold to a plantation owner. This Academy Award Winning film for Best Picture portrays a story of a man protesting for his freedom to be able to get home to his family.

Akeelah and the Bee – A 2006 film talking about an 11-year-old girl that has an incredible talent on spelling to which she wants to join contests such as the National Spelling Bee. A mysterious teacher started supporting her to her goals despite her mother’s objection to her dreams. She managed to have support from the community and friends up until she won the contest alongside her competitor. Directed by Doug Atchison, the movie won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture.
