Belgium Urban Legends
The Smilers – Smiling is a not bad habit, but what if you have to smile forever from ear to ear? This story back in the 2000’s from Brussels talks about a woman being confronted by a man holding a knife to her, asking her to either be raped or she has to smile forever. Even though it doesn’t seem a scary thing, she chose to smile. This kind of similar to one of the Japanese urban legends, but the catch is that the smilers are woman who walk around the city with scars on their mouths.
The Hitcher with Hairy Hands – this story is kind of connected to another Belgium urban legend called “The Butcher Mons” where they are really and proven true. The butchers kill or murder women and place them in bags to be seen in visible highways. The story of the hitcher was once there was a woman who was heading home from a movie theater only to find out that there is an old lady in her car. She asked her and the old woman said that she got lost and scared so she decided to go to the car. The lady then asked if the driver can get her home and the driver said yes. When the old lady said to take a left turn, the woman noticed a VERY very hairy hands. She panicked and decided to crash into a local bus. She asked helped to the bus driver but when went back to the car, the old lady was gone. Police then conclude that it might be the Butcher Mons and the lady driver might be the next victim.
White Calvary – In 1918, Captain Hayward saw a bunch of Germans throwing grenades and shooting in an empty space. This is obviously scary and frightening because it doesn’t look like they are just practicing for a battle. After seeing that, they run away. The English soldiers then captured them and were asked about the incident, only to find out that these soldiers saw a strange army riding white horses as to what they described as “deathlike”. They thought that these were terrorists from unknown land since their forms are strangely unknown to them.
The Needles – HIV was a highly startled virus in the 1980’s. This is like the Corona Virus back in the day. During those times, people obviously are scared of what’s to happen so panic were seen everywhere. Some people were even suspecting that there were blood needles left in movie theaters, one is on UGC de Brouckere. People say that there was a man leaving these needles and a note saying “Welcome to the world of HIV”.
Buckriders – these are demonic presence that rode in the sky via goats as present from Satan himself. Back in 1700’s, Joan Van Muysen claimed to be a Buckrider and threatened a farmer, blackmailing him from money. Most likely, these raiders are thieves, raiding peaceful communities. Those who were caught and proven buckriders were sentenced to death.
