As a Horror Fan,

Do you have friends who are a big fan of scary films? Have you ever wondered why they like watching horror flicks rather than love stories in romance films or guns and battles in actions? Do you have what it takes to be a horror fanatic?

I became obsessed with horror films ever since I saw Child’s Play when I was a kid. Though my friends were scared because we were all covered in blankets as we watch the film, I was fond of seeing stories that scare you. Being a horror fan is not fun as it always be. There’s a big difference between horror film and films that just want to have a monster or ghost in the story to call it a horror movie. I have seen a lot of films like that where writers attempt to scare most people but not horror fans.

Scary films are not made with a bunch of CGI effects. I am not a fan and I hate it when productions do that. Yes, you can make a film with CGI but don’t get too complicated with it. It decreases the essence of how the story should be because you focused more on the effects rather than the scene.

As a horror fan, I am not bothered if the scene is scary or not. But if it is scary, then kudos to the director and crew for making such a wonderful film. If it is not scary as what horror films should be, then I’ll focus more on the story. It is actually amazing if it is based on true to life. Real life stories are always a step ahead compared to fiction ones. Why? Because you don’t have to make a lot of effort just to scare people, the dramatization alone is enough for people to jump out.

In case you’re wondering, do horror fans get scared on horror films?

Actually, depends on the film. If the movie scares a horror fan, it means that the movie production did great.

But we, horror fans, often are focused on the story, characters and how good is the story.

The story is always the start and end. Most films struggle with how they will make a scene based on the sequences of the script. Some overreact to the situation while some tend to make the best out of it. If you like to watch films, not just horror ones, you will notice how most are not really good at portraying. People today want value. And it doesn’t matter if you’re a director who already won an Oscar if you can’t meet or exceed to the expectations of the audience.

The characters will always take the wheels when driving the story. If the characters suck, then it will be the end of it. But I don’t like the fact that most award shows tend to not look at how great horror acting is. The film that starred Lupita Nyong’o which is US was stabbed. She did a very good acting in there yet she didn’t win an Oscar or even got nominated for it. If you haven’t watched the film, take a look at it for you to see.

Here’s a list of my horror go-to films, in case you’re asking and if you haven’t watch them:

  • Shutter (Thai Film) – will make a review about this one

  • The Conjuring 1 and 2

  • The Hills Have Eyes Franchise

  • Human Centipede 1, 2 and 3

  • Feng Sui (Filipino Film)

  • 3 AM Franchise (Thai Film)

  • Texas Chainsaw Massacre
