Man's best friend!
No one can win hearts like man’s best friend and in honor of this bond between man and canine, Dog Day is celebrated.
"The love of a dog is a pure thing. He gives you a trust which is total. You must not betray it."
Celebrated annually every August 26th, National Dog Day is a day for people to recognize the importance of dogs and how they impact their lives on a daily basis. It is also a day to recognize how hard service dogs work on our behalf and also to draw attention to the plight of abused and abandoned dogs.
From keeping us safe working for the emergency services to supporting people who are blind, deaf, or disabled, dogs do a lot for us humans, and this is an opportunity to give something back.
About National Dog Day
This holiday was created in 2004 by Colleen Paige, a Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Advocate. She created this day so that all dogs can be celebrated and also to draw attention to the number of dogs in shelters and to encourage adoption to those who have yet to find a place to call home.
WHY AUGUST 26TH?
The date of August 26th is significant, as it's the date that Colleen's family adopted her first dog "Sheltie" from the local animal shelter when Colleen was 10 years old.
Since the first celebration in 2004, National Dog Day has grown and is now celebrated across the world
Ways to celebrate!
There are a number of different ways to celebrate this day.
"No matter how little money and how few possessions you own, having a dog makes you rich."
Celebrating National Dog Day can be as easy as giving your four-legged friend a big hug and kiss (if they like that sort of affection)!
Some people choose to use this day to spend more time with their dog and to buy him/her new toys or sweaters. Other people take time during this day to volunteer their time and money to various dog welfare organizations.
You can also celebrate Dog Day by making a donation to an animal charity of your choice
Needless to say, another great way to honor Dog Day would be to give a dog a home that really needs it.
Conclusion
This day is the perfect time to not only reconnect with your furry family member but also to consider how you can help society realize the importance of dogs and how their treatment should become more humane.
Take time to appreciate the love and value that dogs bring to our daily lives, and to do your bit for homeless and abused dogs the world over.
