Racism in commercial
What does the picture tell?
The picture clearly shows racism. It shows discrimination in which people with identical ethnic characteristics or assumed race are viewed differently due to the social significance of the cultural definitions associated with skin color. This did not reflect the diversity of true beauty, which is something Dove is passionate about and a core value, and it should not have happened. The commercial reinforces the stereotype that fair people are more attractive than dark people in a different nauseating way.
What is the motif?
The motif of the picture is to help women in feeling at ease in their skin. Their whitening products are intended to brighten one's skin tone visibly. The color used are white (purity or innocence), brown (dependability and reliability), black (strength), and blue (serenity).
How does it affect you and the viewers?
Racism and its variants are one of the most pressing concerns confronting the world today. Given that racism is a highly rooted phenomenon in the Western world, the notion promoted by this advertisement seems to be that only white women should be considered attractive. It affects me because it shows inequality and racism, especially on the beauty standard of society. Racism can create a lot of damage to both communities and individuals. People would grow up and have a mindset of society's opinion that dark-skinned people, especially women, would look better if their skin were lighter. The brains are being infiltrated with the idea that "white is right," which in turn drives many black people to believe that whitening their skin can brighten their prospects (literally), increase their general quality of life, and, tragically, make them more beautiful.
