Death penalty
When I hear the words "death punishment," thoughts of ruthlessness come to my mind. Throughout history, the death sentence has been regarded as the most severe punishment that can be imposed on a person who has committed crimes.
I considered it unethical and immoral. However, in a society where many serious crimes are committed, it is necessary to effectively offer one's life to pay for one's wrongdoings. Many people believe that capital punishment should be abolished totally, but others disagree because they believe that the capital penalty helps maintain society in order by preventing future murders, discouraging crimes, and providing closure for victims and their families.
It makes no sense to put individuals to death to demonstrate that we are against killing. This assertion is against the country's belief system. Certain populations are disproportionately affected by the death sentence.
The mentally ill, people of color, and the destitute, account for most death row inmates. On a worldwide basis, the poor are likewise disproportionately affected by the death sentence. They have a decreased likelihood of receiving effective representation, and the system is skewed against them. The death penalty can be used to control rather than to punish.
Many governments around the world, on the other hand, use executions for non-lethal offenses. By using the death penalty so arbitrarily, authorities create their own standards for what is "acceptable" in society and what is a fitting punishment. Citizens are terrorized, and their human rights are violated.
How many more people on death row are on the verge of being executed in an unjust manner? Even if they aren't all guilty, a comprehensive review of their cases could reveal discrimination, inadequate representation, and other faults that suggest they were not given a fair trial. In a culture where the judicial system cannot be trusted to provide justice, the death penalty is an unduly harsh punishment.
The death penalty is unjustifiable. There is no legitimate justification for the government to believe it has the authority to execute people. As much as the persons who are executed are murdered, capital punishment is murder. The death penalty is unnecessary and should be eliminated. It violates the Constitution, which provides that no harsh or unusual punishment will be applied. The death sentence is the cruelest, most inhumane, and most demeaning punishment imaginable. Regardless of who is accused, the nature or circumstances of the crime, guilt or innocence, or method of execution, Amnesty International condemns the death sentence in all cases. Perhaps the most important reason why the death penalty is wrong is that it does not prevent crime. While many people believe the death sentence isn't ideal, they believe it is justified if it deters future perpetrators.
