The Benefits of Writing
For many people, writing is a tedious task that is annoying but necessary in daily life. Whether it’s writing an email for work, taking notes in school or just simply for fun, it’s a skill that we can’t get around and probably never will. But that shouldn’t be a bad thing!
Writing, in its essence, is something that can bring many unexpected benefits and results that help us immensely in the future. Personally, I started writing out of fun by blogging and because I wanted to write a story. However, I noticed over time that other than being a nice hobby, it brings various additional benefits when done over a prolonged period of time.
Other than putting your thoughts on paper, writing is something much more complex. Especially for those who speak and use more languages than their native one, writing is the perfect skill to practice and learn more about them. For me, English is my second language but I use it daily because I study abroad. In that sense, writing has helped me immensely in not only understanding the language better but also expressing myself more easily.
One of the most important benefits of writing are a much greater vocabulary and choice of words. Not only does formulating sentences become easier and faster, it also sounds much better than others. It’s a skill that makes you seem more professional at work and more experienced in general.
Indirectly, this also boosts your confidence. There are more than just a few who consider writing to be scary and frightening. Finding the right words to say, looking out for grammar, making sure the content is correct, there are many reasons why it could be a bother. Yet, when writing becomes your hobby, it’s anything but that. It’s a fun activity that is more like a game you have played for years. A game you know in and out.
Writing is something everyone can do. Just pick up your pen and laptop and try it out.
I’m currently writing a book as a hobby and the most I gained from it is not from the story itself. The finished product itself is important, sure, but what helped me the most was the process, or better said, writing the story.
Apart from expanding my vocabulary and expression, and confidence, what the plot forced me to do was using my brain to the limit.
Yes, I’m talking about creativity.
It’s something so simple but most people lack it. Contrary to what one would expect, the probably most useful and precious benefit of writing happens before you pick up the pen.
The thinking, planning and execution is what makes up the entire process of writing of any kind. Plus, when you’re finally done with your work, there is this clear feeling of exhilaration. A sense of accomplishment.
Writing is a basic skill that brings many benefits that are not usually discovered at first sight. This includes vocabulary, wording but also deeper aspects like confidence and creativity. Not to mention, there are more to be explored with rising experience.
Regardless, writing is a great skill in life and everyone should cherish it more and perfect it with their heart. It might come in handy sometime.
