Jokes are something which makes us laugh real hard and causes us to tear up and lose our breath when we hear it. This is harmless and aims to entertain or share an experience to others. It's primary reason is to make us laugh and somehow forget how we feel or the things that we experience.
Upto what extent can you accept a joke as a joke?
I've encountered lots of different people who has bubbly personality who can make me laugh with a small remark and make me lose my breath for a minute for laughing so hard. These type of people has the personality of being sanguine.
I have also experienced people who love to joke about others. They say profane words that make others laugh. They make fun of other people's disability, personality, physical appearance or even the words they said.
Honestly, this isn't fun at all. Others might see it as a joke but for me it's a serious offense. Others might think it's okay because it's just a joke and it's supposed to be harmless but that joke can cause someone to lose his self-esteem. Others might even clap their hands from laughing so hard by people who had been insulted in a joke but it's not just about you laughing about it. It's about how the peron you make fun of feels.
The generation today is too insensitive about these things. Just because it's fun or others laugh about it, you will also patronize it. The more you share things like this encourage those people who wants nothing else but to gain more likes, shares and follows by doing this.
The memes posted in Facebook or other social media platforms which has been retweeted, shared or seen by many people isn't really a funny thing to begin with. They use pictures or videos of others people's flaws or embarrassing moments and compile it in one video then post it with different memes without even knowing how the people involved in the photograph or video will feel about it.
There was an instance where a man was photographed and his face has been in different memes.
"I don't have my name on the list of bonafide people to receive government assistance but I am listed in the narco list." This is what the meme says together with his picture.
I watched as to how he cried when he knew that his face was used for this kind of meme. Many people has laughed about it without even knowing the truth behind his picture.
It turns out that he came from a province where he works as a farmer which explains why he looks unhealthy. He has been working so hard and when he lined up to receive government assistance his photo was captured and used for a meme where he and his wasn't even aware of. Not until someone concerned showed him the photo.
You see not everyone is supposed to be laughed about. I get it that it's funny to watch or use this memes but we should also remember that this kind or jokes are way too personal and inappropriate.
The other joke that people often laugh about are the green jokes.
It's never fun to be part of a meme or a joke no matter what gender you have. Most victims are women. When a woman posts a sexy or even a photo wherein she's fully clothed, people will edited the picture as to how a man holds her breast or her other body part. It disgusts me to even think about it.
There was this 17 year-old girl who posted her photo wearing a shirt and was edited multiple times with different men who are touching her breasts. If a person can edit it how much more doing it personally? Her photo was even asked to be taken down for being 'inappropriate' where the real inappropriate are those who edited it and put malice to the picture.
There were also this mother with her three teenage children who were edited with a variety of alcoholic beverages as an indication for men to choose from. They became a menu for drinks.
The funny thing is many people used the 😆 emoji to show how fun it is. This is already a sexual abuse.
There were also instances in a normal conversation between group of people who grade the beauty of women and their looks by their body shapes and body sizes. Imagine being the center of fun of others.
Cat calling or even sexual jokes like 'I wonder your breast will feel in my palms', 'Hi babe!', 'Your tits are way too small', 'You should not worn anything', and even the whistle of men is way too disgusting and disrespectful.
Even pranks are used in a sexual way. I've seen a prank wherein a boyfriend films his girlfriend while taking a shower just to make a content. If you're a good boyfriend, why would you allow your girlfriend's nakedness to be seen by others? Isn't it your job to protect her and not to expose her?
Truth is, no matter what a woman wears as long as the man is a maniac or disrespectful, he can always find ways to use vulgar words just to please his ego by making fun of women.
Jokes are half meant.
A joke is supposed to be harmless. It's supposed to make you laugh or smile without making others feel less about themselves.
Before you laugh on a joke can you please think of what others will feel or think about it?
To be honest I also laugh in some pranks or even in some memes, but I know my limit. I know when to laugh and when to know that it's way past the limit. I know when a meme or a joke has gone too far that it shouldn't be laughed about.
Remember that everything starts in the mind. I hate joking about other people's appearance or disability because I know that I myself am not perfect.
Of a person can joke about it lightly as if it's a natural thing, how much more in doing it? The more you think about it, the more other people sees it, please be reminded of the impact it has.
Your simple joke can turn someone miserable and feel worthless. Your joke can cause commotion and misunderstanding. Your joke can become disrespectful and sexual.
Know your limits. You can joke even without causing damage to others.
I was also used in a joke but I'm strong enough to retort and make him realize that I'm not someone to be laughed about, but what about others?
How about others who can't stand or protect themselves?
If you're a man who likes to joke about women can you please think of your mother, sister, wife, girlfriend, or daughter before making green jokes? Please also think about them before laughing in memes about women.
If you're a woman never allow a man to have an impression that it's okay for you to be used as a laughing stock. Never allow anyone to give sexual comments about you even if it's a joke. It's never okay to be seen and used this way. Never give any hint or any slight consent.
Tell them that it makes you feel uncomfortable. Make them realize that it's never okay by not laughing together with them. Dirty jokes are named that way for a reason. It is dirty and disgusting that no one should be hearing it.
Allow yourself to be surrounded with people who truly respects and cares for you.
