In Bangladesh, an average person eats 104 eggs a year. Eggs are the cheapest protein available. To highlight the importance of eggs, the people involved in the poultry sector have called for the inclusion of eggs in the school curriculum as well as in the mid-day meal.

Today is World Egg Day on Friday. This year's theme is 'Eat eggs every day, increase immunity'. On the occasion of the day, a virtual discussion meeting was organized by the Department of Livestock, Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC) and World Poultry Science Association-Bangladesh Branch.

Shawkat Ali, a teacher of Poultry Science Department of Bangladesh Agricultural University, presented the keynote address at the meeting. It is said that egg production in the country has increased 2.6 times in the last 10 years. The per capita egg consumption in the country is now 104 per year. By 2030, this number will increase to 165.

Highlighting the various nutritional properties of eggs, it is said that egg yolks have more nutrients, so eating yolks cannot be omitted.

The article cites research sources from the United States Department of Agriculture (USD) as saying that eggs are a readily available and important source of protein in the national diet. Eggs are the cheapest protein available. A healthy person can eat three eggs a day. Eggs are beneficial for all ages. Vitamin-D is needed more to prevent corona. And eggs are a great source of vitamin D.

BPICC president Moshiur Rahman called on the government to include eggs in the curriculum and in school mid-day meals.

Speaking as the chief guest, Fisheries and Livestock Ministry Secretary Raunak Mahmud said the egg market is now more than Tk 12,000 crore. Many expatriates have returned to the country. They are thinking of joining the poultry industry.

Regarding the inclusion of eggs in mid-day meal in schools, the secretary said he would speak to the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education on the issue. He also said that he would discuss the issue of inclusion in the curriculum with the Ministry of Education. The secretary urged to think about how to make eggs more readily available.

Nathu Ram Sarkar, director general of the Livestock Research Institute, said the nutrition system in the country has improved a lot. The tendency to eat eggs has increased among people. In 2010, the production of eggs was 600 crores, now it is 1 thousand 736 crores. Besides, he said, there is no fake egg in Bangladesh.

President of World Poultry Science Association Lutfe Fazle Rahim Khan, teacher of Food and Nutrition Institute of Dhaka University Khaleda Islam and some district and upazila livestock officials also spoke on the occasion.
