We often notice how big the structures and the materials are but did not realize that most of them are created with the help of nanotechnology. It is undeniable that nanotechnology gives huge contribution to civil engineering to support and make this course enhanced. The properties and durability of materials are improved through studying of its small components. This also helps the advancement of functionality of different products and increase the number of production of civil engineering industry. Certainly, nanotechnology has an application when it comes to civil engineering since this course has a huge part in this society.

Concrete cement means a lot in civil engineering as it is part of the most important materials in building structures. We are using this material even before to build the houses, but the main problem of engineers is the cement will crack if it is built for a long time. Hence, experts look for a solution to resolve this issue, luckily, they were successful. Recently, I watched a Facebook video from my feed where they introduced a material called bioconcrete where it is a concrete that has a special ingredient specifically bacteria that is mixed on the concrete. As a result, the cement can heal itself if it has a crack, if the water is absorbed by the concrete, the bacteria will react and fix the cracked cement.

In addition, steel also contribute in construction of structures to make it stronger and holds the foundation of the building better. The problem in steel is it is prone to rust and make it fragile which is dangerous if it will be used in the construction, however with the help of nanotechnology, this issue can be resolved through galvanizing coats the steel in zinc. It can help the steel to become corrosion resistant or slowing the spread of rust. I believe that scientists will look for more best alternatives in this kind of solution and soon, there it will be effortless for us to produce corrosion resistant steel.

It also helps to conserve energy by using solar panels that create electricity by natural way of observing rays or light from the sun. This activity lessens the creation of waste and conserve the use of energy in the society which is also cost-effective. Solar panels, civil engineering and nanotechnology are related to each other since we are using and apply them for cost-effective solution of the society.

On top of that, nanotechnology continue to adapt and experiment new things to help civil engineering industry. By using nanotechnology, it conserves energy, improve durability, enhance the materials’ resistance and other properties of materials. As the technology is continually growing, there are more discoveries that will happen in the future and hopefully, there will be more interesting discoveries that is related to civil engineering.

Personally, the bioconcrete is what I like the most among the product of nanotechnology. It means a lot to the engineers and people of the society to save more and spend less than the use of a regular type of cement. The examples above are only the sign of the growth of nanotechnology not only in civil engineering but also in other field of courses.

This was quite interesting to read as it relates to my field of study, the idea behind bio-concrete is genius but I think I still need to do more research on it, if this type of concrete gets approved for building constructions, it would solve a lot of problems
