Bad manners and attitude According to **Oxford learner's dictionary**, manners are behavior that is considered to be polite in a particular society or culture. Attitude is the way that you think and feel about somebody/something; the way that you behave towards somebody/something that shows how you think and feels. https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/definition/english/manner Bad manners and negative attitude has become a norm in society today and most people now see it as "cool" if you're mannerless. Here in Nigeria, fans of a popular musician known as naira marley call themselves marlians, and one of their mottos is "no manners".
**Image source** https://www.pexels.com/photo/woman-in-gray-tank-top-3812721/ An incident happened in school yesterday that inspired me to write this article. As I have said in my previous articles, I am currently doing my industrial training (IT) and as a fisheries student, it starts with managing the school's fish farm. We have a regular farm manager at the fish farm and one of the rules he gave was that we should always wear our farm coat before entering the farm but some persons choose to break that rule. The farm manager then decided one day that anybody caught without a farm coat will be sent out of the farm. Rules are meant to be broken, and this one got broken by some persons. They ended up getting sent out of the farm, but they are pardoned after pleading with the manager. Yesterday, a boy broke the farm coat rule and when the manager tried to send him out of the farm, he refused! 😀
**Image source** https://www.pexels.com/photo/woman-in-gray-tank-top-3812721/ All of us were a bit surprised because nobody has ever challenged the manager that way. The boy kept ranting that he has every right to be on the farm but in the end, he finally gave up and said he will come back when it's time for class We had a class scheduled that morning with a lecturer which will be held at the farm. When it was time for the class, we all assembled and I noticed that the lecturer was talking with the farm manager. After a while, they both approached us and that's when I noticed the rude boy was sitting in the class. The lecturer spoke about the issue and she told the boy to leave her class and go settle things with the manager. The boy left and came back after a while with the manager storming right behind him, looks like the trouble has escalated. The manager came and said the boy is still raising his voice at him and kept saying he doesn't want to cause a scene. That was the last straw, the lecturer got angry and said to the boy; **"you have very bad manners and are also disrespectful, even after I told you to go sort things out with the manager, you still went there to cause trouble".** She still sent him out of the class and said he shouldn't return until he settles things with the manager. After that, she gave us a very long sermon on the need to respect everyone and cultivate good manners. Can you see the problem with the above issue? The boy has a very high ego, is disrespectful, and has no manners. His attitude towards the farm manager is uncalled for when he knows he actually broke the rules. He later came back to the class and the farm manager whispered something to the lecturer which made me believe the issue has been settled. Why did the boy have to go through all that stress when he knows he is still going to apologize at the end? A simple apology and some pleas are more than enough for the manager to spare him from being sent out of the farm, but he decided to feed his ego and displayed a very rude attitude.

I have seen a couple of cases where teenagers are being downright rude to their parents and other elders. I can't stand the sight of seeing a teenager insulting someone old enough to be their mother or father, I actually feel embarrassed and heartbroken whenever I come across a scene like that I feel this issue escalated because of the evolution of the internet and social media because I remember back when I was growing up, I hardly hear issues like this. I do know that bad manners and negative issues have been in existence right from time, but the frequency isn't as high as what we have these days. The internet has made it possible that all social vices are now been widespread and even celebrated. Being rude and mannerless is now been regarded as cool, and the person involved is hailed as someone that can't be intimidated. Closing thoughts Whenever I see someone displaying his bad manners and attitude in public, I actually blame it on the parents because I feel they didn't instill good manners in their children. One thing I have noticed with people with their bad behavior is that they are usually spoiled as a kid, their parents do let them off easily whenever they are being rude and the usual excuse I hear is; "he is just a child" or "she's just a child", for how long will they continue to be a child. It takes nothing from you to be polite and respectful to everyone you come across, a simple smile can help to diffuse a very dicey situation. A lot of people have lost good opportunities because of their attitude, and things would have been a lot easier if they behaved the right way I will end this article with a very popular quote: **A bad attitude is like a flat tire. If you don’t change it, you won’t go anywhere - Joyce Meyer.** Side note I won't be very active for now because I have an exam to prepare for in just 10 days, and the worst thing is I haven't even started reading 🙈 I want to reduce my activities online so I can focus on my studies 😉 **Thanks for reading** **Wednesday November 17, 2021**

I once became involved in hiring process for our team's open position and you know what is the first thing that I am looking from the candidate? His or her attitide. My reasoning is always like technical skills is something that can be developed once they jlin the team, but attitude is something that is very difficult to change.
Exactly ma'am, attitude will determine how well they will work with the team. Technical skills can be learnt over time but manners and attitude are hard to develop
Exactly..
Hawu, I was trying to write that quote in a comment section, but when I got to the end if your article, oops!! He has written it already..lol All good and fine, bad attitude will lead us no where, rather it will only put us into trouble..you want to show your ego, you want to prove how mannerless you can be right? Why not go and show it off to a military man and then you'll get to understand what's supping... hehehehe, sounds funny right? But that's true true. Just a simple instruction, the boy cannot follow, waiting until the manager will talk, even if he was caught in the act, a simple obedience will solve the whole issue... The boy act can best be described as stupidity, but to him, he might be wise.. Wish you success in your exam, I will be done with mine, next week Tuesday..take your time to read, it's mandatory.
The boy felt he is wise enough to go against the manager and that he will have the support of the lecturer, but he was shocked at how things turned out and at the end he decided to plead. That was something he could have done in the first place and prevented the whole issue from escalating, but he decided to be rude and mannerless
Well.. For others who have huge egos and pride.. It's just too hard for them to say sorry.. But that simple word can resolve any dispute if told sincerely.
That word sorry has a way of easing tensions and solving problems that might otherwise be frustrating and stressful
Behavior nor attitude is very important in dealing others respectfully. Having your attitude is what your personality and who u are define.
It simply shows how well you're are brought up at home and how you relate with others
Exactly🙌
Everything happens in schools, the problem is the clash between different points of view.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but you have to make your opinion in a way that won't affect others so there won't be a problem
The new generations do generally have a more irreverent and disrespectful attitude and it is often shameful. Good luck with your exams!
The disrespectful ones believe it's the new way of been tagged as cool. Thanks ma'am 🤗
Wishing you success with your examination, the point is that a lot of crazy things have seen a normal thing among the youths. I have seen a child disgrace her mother in public which no reason justifies, we can't change the world by forcing everyone to be respectful but we should do the needful to the younger generation who are yet to tap into the terrible life of disrespecting people.
That attitude is very shameful and disgraceful. No matter the reason, it's very wrong to disgrace one's mother in public, such people don't usually make it far in life because of the curse they have brought on their selves
Our behavior and attitude will define us what kind person we are. We all have bad sides but it's up to us how we dealt with other people how we respect so that we will be respected also. Good luck for the exam friend. Me also i have a lot of paperwork nahhhhh I'm getting lazy
We all get lazy at one point but it's important to get back to the things we are supposed to do. Good luck on your paperwork dear 🤗
Our behavior reflects our personality. So whatever we do will definitely affect our personal lives. As human beings, we should not behave like this at all. As human beings, we must learn to respect one another. Be good, you.
They are certain ways we are supposed to behave especially in public. Our attitude and manners shows the upbringing we have from home. Thanks Mazekin 😊
There are a lot of reasons why people having a bad manners. Yes you're right Kushyzee, one is if the parents spoil their children. A big possiblity that their children didn't learn how to be respectful. Yes the social medias too are the biggest influence that's why if they are not old yet you must teach them a good moral and behaviors. It's for their own sake. Please do no spoil them since it will led them to the wrong path time passing by.
This is why the parents are always blamed because they are supposed to train their children on the right way to behave before they are exposed to social media. The major problems occur when their children starts using social media and learning all sort of negative things from it. Thanks for the beautiful comment Ramona 🤗
Yes that's true. Parents are the first having a big responsibility for their children. Teach them well while they are in early ages. Yes that's why there are pros and cons with the social medias. The parents must guide their children from it. Hehehe you're always welcome Kushyzee.☺️
I wouldn't want to blame all parents on this because some children actually are bent to have this ill attitude in them. In Yoruba we say "a child who is trained but didn't accept it". Some parents are really trying their best, but you know we have some children who have decided to go their own way. I just hope people with this attitude would one day Understand the importance of exhibiting good manners because it pays at the end.
You're actually right sha, some people just can't be trained in the correct way and they are very stubborn, so I guess sometimes it's just the person's personality
Just like you said it, it's now seen as being sharp & smart and can't be intimidated but that's a big wrong. Mannerless is mannerless, there's no two ways about it. Even if I get offended by an elderly person and I have the right to rain insult on him, my tongues will be heavy to release such.
Aswear, I wonder how people just stay and be insulting someone old enough to even be their grandmother. Some persons no actually get sense sha
If it was his first time doing it, maybe he was just having a bad day, lol! He was brave enough to show character with the manager but glad things were settled in the end.
It's actually not the first time he has been disrespectful, he does it a lot and it makes us realise he does has bad manners
I see, he really has an attitude :)
Exactly ma'am
I completely agree with you on blaming the parents for kid's behavior.. there is a saying in our regional language that "if you don't bend a plant, you can't bend it after it becomes a tree" so it is completely their duty to teach kids about discipline :)
We also have that saying here in my country, it's when a plant is young that you can bend it not when it has grown into a tree, same as good manners should be instilled in a child when they are young
yes exactly... kids need to be taught early
Manners starts from home!
Exactly ma'am 😊
Firstly I wish you success on your papers… truly it wouldn’t take anything out of the picture if we just say the sorry and let it slide… the problem escalate, sometimes it wouldn’t just end there people take it too far… beautiful topic and write up, each day self evaluation is key, are we really doing the right thing and making the right response..
You're definitely right about the daily self evaluation and it's something we should all do at the end of the day. We should evaluate our choices and decisions made for that day and check if we did the right thing. Thanks for the beautiful comment King Gozie 😊
