Did humans live hundreds of years?

To many, the idea that men have lived for centuries sounds like fiction. They do not take this more seriously than "The Sumerian King List", which reads in part: "When the kingdom was lowered from heaven, the kingdom was (first) in Eridu. (In) Eridu, A-lulim (see He became king and ruled 28,800 years , Alalgar reigned 36,000 years, two kings ruled for 64,800 years.

Without giving these amazing numbers, the Bible shows that there was a time when people lived much longer than today. We read, for example, that Adam, Seth, Enos, Kenan, Jared, Metusalah, and Noah lived more than 900 years. (Genesis 5: 5, 8, 11, 14, 20, 27; 9:29) Is that really so?

One may ask, "How could the ancients live for centuries if very few live for hundreds of days today?" It is impossible. In this context, it can be said that no one can say when life expectancy will reach its final limit. The Encyclopædia Britannica (1976 edition, Macropædia, vol. 10, p. 911) states: “The exact length of human life is unknown, although it is believed that there is a maximum lifespan of the genetic material in the established human race. in the U.S. United. At first glance, this statement seems irrational. No one can live 1000 years safely. While everyone can agree that the probability of a person living 1000 years is infinite, there is no scientific evidence that this statement is true or not. ""

From a scientific point of view, therefore, no absolute evidence can be presented to prove or disprove what the Bible says about the long lives of some men in antiquity. Therefore, the biblical statements are based on their merits. Does the context in which they occur show that they are in fact real?

Some have suggested that the years listed in the Bible should be shorter for these men, perhaps just one month. However, this does not fit in the context where the Bible mentions the age when men like Kenan and Mahalalel died. We read: “Kenan lived seventy years. Then he became the father of Mahalalel. After his birth, Mahalalel Kenan lived eight hundred and forty years. During that time he became the father of sons and daughters. Kenan's days were nine hundred and ten years, and he died. And Mahalalel lived sixty-five years. Then he became the father of Jared. (Genesis 5: 12-15) Replacing the word "year" with "months" would mean that Kenan and Mahalalel became parents before the age of six. That is certainly not reasonable.

That the years were not 30 days, but probably 12 30 days, is clear from what the Bible says about the flood. The flood began "during Noah's six hundred years, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month." The ark landed in the mountains of Ararat five months later, "in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month." According to Genesis 7:24, this happened after "the water continued to flood the earth for one hundred and fifty days." Since five months is "one hundred and fifty days", one month would be thirty days. The Bible also specifically mentions the "tenth month," followed by a period of forty days and two periods of seven days (Genesis 8: 5, 6, 10, 12). Since the sixteenth year [of Noah's life], the first month of the morning. On the first day of the month water came out of the earth ... And in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth dried up. Of course, there is no reason to say that it was only about a month from Noah's 600 years to his 601st birthday. No, it was a full lunar year of twelve months and ten days.

The fact that people live hundreds of years is quite consistent with the whole context of the Bible. Scripture tells us that the first man, Adam, was created perfectly. He had the prospect of an infinite life ahead of him. The beautiful summer house in which it was installed contained everything that was necessary to sustain human life indefinitely. In the first book of the Bible, we read: "Jehovah God made every tree desirable and good in the eyes that food might sprout from the earth, and the tree of life in the middle of the garden." (Genesis 2: 9) “The tree of life” was God's guarantee to continue living for those who had the right to participate. When the first man, Adam, broke God's law, he lost the right to eat from that tree and was cast out of his wonderful heavenly home.

At the same time, Adam's disobedience destroyed his perfection and this shortened his life and his descendants.

In perfect condition, Adam's body had the potential to last forever, just like other sinless people. Since man was created for infinite longevity, Adam and his first offspring must logically have lived much longer than their later offspring, further from perfection.

This is exactly what the Bible shows. After the Great Flood of Noah's time, which took place for 16 centuries since the creation of Adam, human life was greatly reduced. Life expectancy continued to decline for those born after the flood.

About 300 years after Abraham's death, the average life expectancy of people continued to decline, so that Moses could say, “In our day our days are seventy years; and when they are eighty by a special agent. (Ps. 90:10) These words about average life expectancy still apply today.

Therefore, according to the Bible, people have lived for centuries.
